These are the various pleasures of the earth. Son of good family, if endowed with ten qualities, a Bodhisattva is one who has completely abandoned the eight unfavorable conditions. What are the ten? They are: those who turn away from non-virtuous dharmas. Those who do not transgress the precepts established by the Tathagata. Those who are free from miserliness. Those who have done the work of the former victors. Those who are diligent in meritorious deeds. Those who are perfect in wisdom. Those who are skilled in means. Those who are perfect in aspirations. Those who have much renunciation. Those who have initiated diligence. Son of good family, a Bodhisattva does not, through any non-virtuous action that is manifestly performed, take birth in the hells of sentient beings, and having been born in those hells, experience unbearable, harsh, hot, and unpleasant feelings, or remain there for a long time, or generate a mind of harm towards those hell beings. Rather, a Bodhisattva is naturally endowed with the path of the ten virtuous actions, and as such, he will not be born in the hells of sentient beings. Son of good family, a Bodhisattva does not, through any transgression of the precepts established by the Tathagata, take birth among animals, or having been born among them, experience the unbearable suffering of animals. Son of good family, a Bodhisattva does not, through the cause, condition, or basis of miserliness, take birth among the pretas, and having been born among them, experience the unbearable and harsh suffering of the pretas. A Bodhisattva is not born into a family of wrong views, where birth would lead to being separated from the conditions for associating with virtuous friends. Why is that? Bodhisattvas are those who have practiced in the past, who have done the work of the former victors, therefore they are born into families of right views, and having been born into those families, the conditions become extremely perfect, and those conditions further increase, expand, and widen. A Bodhisattva is not born with any form of disability that would render him unfit to be a vessel for the Buddha's teachings.

They do not become devoid of qualities. Bodhisattvas are diligent in accumulating merit and are established by merit. Whatever actions are performed towards the Tathagata's stupa, or the Dharma, or the Sangha, through approaching, relying, meditating, and increasing, they perform those actions that make the faculties complete. With complete faculties, they become vessels for the Buddha's teachings. Bodhisattvas are not born in border regions where beings are foolish, ignorant, mute like sheep, without merit, without the ability to understand the meaning of well-spoken and poorly-spoken words, not becoming vessels for the Buddha's teachings, not knowing this shore or the other shore, not regarding as ascetics, not regarding as Brahmins. Bodhisattvas are born in central regions where beings have sharp faculties, clear faculties, are wise, respected, have merit, have the ability to fully understand the meaning of well-spoken and poorly-spoken words, becoming vessels for the Buddha's teachings, knowing this shore and the other shore, regarding as ascetics, regarding as Brahmins. Why is that? Because they possess the power of past wisdom and awareness. Bodhisattvas are not born in places where the birth of many Buddhas becomes fruitless due to their presence, and the benefit of beings is diminished, nor are they born among the long-lived gods. Bodhisattvas are born only in the desire realm, in places where beings can be tamed and the birth of Buddhas can be pleased. Why is that? Because they possess skillful means. Bodhisattvas are not born in empty Buddha-fields where Buddhas do not reside, the Dharma is not heard, and there is no opportunity to make offerings to the Sangha. Bodhisattvas are born in perfect Buddha-fields that possess the Three Jewels. Why is that? Because they possess perfect past aspirations. Bodhisattvas, even upon hearing of such places, do not become weary, nor are they of a rough and uncivilized nature.

It is like this, Bodhisattvas, upon hearing such situations, will immediately feel weary. Having felt weary, in order to abandon these non-virtuous dharmas, they will diligently practice virtuous dharmas. Noble son, if one possesses these ten dharmas, the Bodhisattva will have completely abandoned the eight unfavorable conditions. Noble son, if one possesses these ten dharmas, the Bodhisattva will not lose the mind of enlightenment. What are the ten? They are as follows: Without deceit and trickery, being upright and without crookedness, and having a joyful mind. Towards the Buddhas' teachings and those who uphold them, having no doubt, hesitation, or suspicion. Being free from concealing the teacher of the Dharma. Being free from stinginess towards the Dharma. Being free from the karmic consequences that lead to poverty through the Dharma. Acting according to what is said, without deceiving others. Completely embracing the Mahayana. Towards those who embrace it, having the perception of equality in Dharma, with reverence and respect. Devoting oneself to the Mahayana, inclining towards the Mahayana, and abiding in the Mahayana. Perceiving those who speak the Dharma as teachers, and generating the perception of them as virtuous friends. Noble son, if one possesses these ten dharmas, the Bodhisattva will not lose the mind of enlightenment. Noble son, if one possesses these ten dharmas, the Bodhisattva will remember past lives. What are the ten? They are as follows: Having attended to and revered many Buddhas. Completely embracing the sacred Dharma. Completely upholding moral discipline. Having no regrets. Being without obscurations. Having much joy. Engaging in much meditation. Keeping the mind in equanimity. Being born miraculously. The consciousness not being confused. Noble son, a Bodhisattva who has attended to and revered many Buddhas has respect and reverence for the sacred Dharma. Towards those who completely embrace the sacred Dharma, there is respect and reverence. Because it is its cause, its condition, its basis, without regard for body and life, one completely embraces the sacred Dharma.
