In order to pacify the mind, one should diligently apply oneself, focusing the mind on the nature of mind itself. The nature of mind itself pacifies the mind, placing the mind completely upon the nature of mind. By striving for such pacification, the mind becomes one-pointed. Once one-pointed, it is placed equally. When the mind is placed equally, joy born of solitude manifests. The mind thus becomes joyful, detached from desires, detached from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, accompanied by investigation and analysis, one perfects and abides in the first dhyana, which is endowed with joy and bliss born of solitude. In order to make investigation and analysis disappear, one strives diligently and does not savor the taste of joy and bliss, thinking, "I do not investigate," and thus generates the mind from the first dhyana. He, being separated from investigation and analysis, and with a mind that has become pure and without attachment, inwardly rejoices. Because the continuum of mind has become one, joy and bliss arise from the samadhi that is without investigation and without analysis, and he perfects and abides in the second dhyana. He understands the nature of joy and suffering, and thinking, "This is suffering," he abides in equanimity. Abiding in equanimity, he is endowed with mindfulness and awareness, and experiences happiness with the body. The noble ones praise him, saying, "He is mindful, abides in happiness, and is in a state of equanimity." He perfects and abides in the third dhyana, which is without joy. Thinking, "I will abandon the third dhyana," he turns his mind towards the fourth dhyana. By attaining the fourth dhyana, he reverses the clinging to self. Because the clinging to self is reversed, he also abandons pleasure and also abandons pain. He has abandoned pleasure and has already abandoned suffering, and because of the cessation of joy and displeasure, it is neither pleasure nor pain, but only equanimity and completely pure mindfulness, he perfects and abides in the fourth dhyana. He contemplates his body and the body of space as one. By contemplating in this way, he completely transcends the perception of form in all ways. The perception of obstruction also disappears. In all ways, he completely transcends the perceptions of form, the perception of obstruc

When all feelings have ceased and one does not attend to various perceptions, thinking 'space is infinite,' one dwells having perfected the sphere of infinite space. Having completely transcended the sphere of infinite space, thinking 'consciousness is infinite,' one dwells having perfected the sphere of infinite consciousness. Having completely transcended the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking 'there is nothing,' one dwells having perfected the sphere of nothingness. Having completely transcended the sphere of nothingness, one dwells having perfected the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Above that, whatever is without the mark of mind, where all activities cease, and is free from all obscurations, is called cessation. The Bodhisattva, thinking that this should be known, enters into equipoise. In that, the basis for manifest joy is not produced. With a mind endowed with love, without enmity, without rivalry, without harm, vast, immeasurable, non-dual, having cultivated it very well, one focuses on one direction and pervades it, perfects it, and dwells. Just as in one, so in the second. Just as in the third, so in the fourth, above, below, and around, in all aspects of this entire world, with a mind endowed with love, without enmity, without rivalry, without harm, vast, immeasurable, non-dual, having cultivated it very well, one focuses and pervades it, perfects it, and dwells. Similarly, with compassion, with joy, and with equanimity, with a mind without enmity, without rivalry, without harm, vast, immeasurable, non-dual, having cultivated it very well, one focuses on one direction and pervades it, perfects it, and dwells. Just as in one, so in the second. Just as in the third, so in the fourth, above, below, and around, in all aspects of this entire world, with a mind endowed with equanimity, without enmity, without rivalry, without harm, vast, immeasurable, non-dual, having cultivated it very well, one focuses and pervades it, perfects it, and dwells. One generates the five superknowledges. In that, one does not regress or decline.
