Having been born, because of previous familiarity with the root of virtue, one contemplates thus: Alas! These beings are suffering. Alas! These beings are wretched. Alas! These beings are sick. Alas! These beings are impermanent. Alas! These beings have been sick for a long time. Alas! These beings are blinded by ignorance. That is also because of desire and for the sake of desire. Therefore, for such an abiding world, it is not fitting for me to rely on desires. The so-called desire is a thorough examination of what is not true. The Blessed One has also said in many ways the faults of desires, such as: Desires are like a skeleton. Desires are like the weapon Shakti. Desires are like a sword's edge. Desires are like a razor's edge. Desires are like a snake's head. Desires are like a bubble. Desires are rotten. Desires are foul-smelling. Thinking thus, he becomes weary of that and shaves his hair and beard, puts on saffron robes, and with faith goes forth rightly from home to homelessness. Having gone forth, he exerts effort in order to attain what has not been attained, to comprehend what has not been comprehended, and to realize what has not been realized. He, by that cause, that condition, that basis, holds the teachings that explain the nature of conventional truth and the nature of ultimate truth. For both of those, the wise one correctly meditates on the instructions. By striving to meditate on the instructions without error, he enters the Dharma that accords with the Dharma. And what is the Dharma that accords with the Dharma? It is like this: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. Because he has comprehended the path, he is sharp-witted, clear-witted, and has the faculty of knowing. He is sharp-witted, clear-witted, and has the faculty of knowing, therefore he prefers solitude, and he completely abandons all gatherings.

Oh! In all noisy places, completely abandon everything. Loving to speak, and the conceptualizations of desire, the conceptualizations of harmful thoughts, the conceptualizations of harming others, the conceptualizations of gods, completely abandon everything in all of them. Desiring profit, desiring fame, desiring gain, completely abandon everything in all of them. Since that body and mind are completely secluded, one is skilled in mind. That one reflects on the mind in this way: "Where should I direct this mind for good? Or for evil? Or for what is not indicated? To which Dharma should I direct it?" Thus, one discerns. If one directs it towards good, then joy, satisfaction, and faith arise in that mind. What are those virtuous Dharmas? They are, for example, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment. If one directs it towards evil, then much sorrow and many conceptualizations arise in that. One strives to abandon those non-virtuous Dharmas. What are those non-virtuous Dharmas? They are, for example, attachment, hatred, and ignorance. Attachment should be understood in three ways: great, medium, and small. What is great attachment? It is that which pervades the entire body, the mind is completely seized and abides, and one is attached to it and does not attain a mind free from attachment. Being attached to it, all shame and hesitation completely disappear. How does all shame and hesitation completely disappear? One goes alone in secret, remembers it, conceptualizes it, and deeply yearns for it in a good way, and also regards it as a virtue. Thus, there is no shame in that. How is there no hesitation? Because of its cause, its condition, its basis, one argues, refutes, and opposes parents or teachers and others, and one is not ashamed and regards it as a virtue. Thus, there is no shame in that. Because of its cause, its condition, its basis, one will be born in the lower realms. This is called great attachment. What is medium attachment? When one relies on desires, the task is accomplished.
