is diligent. How is it that a Bodhisattva is uniquely diligent? In this regard, a Bodhisattva thinks thus: "If all the worlds in the ten directions, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, were filled to the brim with a great fire of uninterrupted hell, and when those worlds were consumed, there was a single sentient being suffering, without refuge, without protector, without place or support, even for the sake of that one sentient being, I would willingly step into that fire with my feet, cross those worlds, and liberate that one sentient being. If I am willing to do this, what need is there to mention other minor sufferings?" This is the diligence of a Bodhisattva, which is not shared by all Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, and all non-Buddhists. Therefore, it is said that a Bodhisattva is uniquely diligent. How is it that a Bodhisattva is diligently without disparagement? In this regard, a Bodhisattva thinks thus: "It is difficult to attain Bodhi as a human being. My diligence is small and weak, and I am also lazy. Bodhi is like a fire burning on the top of my head, and it must be cultivated for countless eons, hundreds of thousands of eons, millions of eons, and hundreds of thousands of millions of eons. I am not willing to bear such a burden." A Bodhisattva does not generate such thoughts. A Bodhisattva should think like this: "The Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Enlightened Buddhas, those who have already realized Bodhi, those who are currently realizing Bodhi, and those who will realize Bodhi, all realize Bodhi, are realizing Bodhi, and will realize Bodhi in this way, with this path, and with this diligence. Those Tathagatas also come from the nature of Tathagata, and do not realize Bodhi without the nature of Tathagata. In any case, I will realize the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Bodhi, with the diligence common to all sentient beings, and the diligence focused on all sentient beings."

Therefore, I also seek and strive in the same way! I strive to benefit all sentient beings, and even if sentient beings are in hell, if I strive to benefit them, I will not think of it as Nirvana. One should generate such a mind. In this way, a Bodhisattva is a diligent one who does not despise others. Son of the lineage, how is a Bodhisattva a diligent one without arrogance? When a Bodhisattva initiates diligence, he does not savor the taste of that diligence, he does not slander others because of that diligence, and he does not praise himself. He thinks, 'Who, being of a wise nature, would slander others because of my diligent work?' Son of the lineage, in this way, a Bodhisattva is a diligent one without arrogance. Son of the lineage, possessing these ten qualities, a Bodhisattva is one who has perfect diligence. Son of the lineage, possessing ten qualities, a Bodhisattva is one who has perfect Samadhi. What are the ten? They are: those who are stable in merit, those who have much renunciation, those who have initiated diligence, those who have much learning, those who diligently meditate on the instructions without reversing them, those who have entered the Dharma that accords with the Dharma, those who have sharp faculties, those who are skilled in mind, those who are skilled in Shamatha and Vipassana, and those who are not attached to them. Son of the lineage, how is a Bodhisattva stable in merit? The Bodhisattva has accumulated great roots of virtue in the Mahayana and has practiced well in those different lifetimes, and is embraced by virtuous friends. Whether he is born into a Brahmin family like a great Sala tree, or a Kshatriya family like a great Sala tree, or a householder family like a great Sala tree, wherever he is born, he is a person of faith in that family. After he is born, those causes and conditions increase, expand, and widen even more, and he is inseparable from virtuous friends. Who are those virtuous friends? They are, for example, the Buddhas, the Bhagavad, or the Bodhisattvas. He
