The Bodhisattva, striving to completely liberate all sentient beings who have not fully passed beyond suffering, to lead those who have not crossed over, to liberate those who have not been freed, to give breath to those who have not breathed, and to cause those who have not attained perfect enlightenment to attain perfect enlightenment. As he thus strove and remained, the evil demon Mara came to the Bodhisattva and said: "Son of good family, abandon such exertion! Why? Son of good family, I too have exerted such effort to completely liberate all sentient beings who have not fully passed beyond suffering, to lead those who have not crossed over, to liberate those who have not been freed, to give breath to those who have not breathed, and to cause those who have not attained perfect enlightenment to attain perfect enlightenment. But that is a false and deceptive dharma, used to deceive foolish beings. Son of good family, I have never known any sentient being to attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment through exertion. Son of good family, I know that countless sentient beings have attained complete liberation through the Hearer Vehicle and the Solitary Buddha Vehicle. Son of good family, therefore, you should cease your exertion and not become a follower of afflictions in vain." He thus caused the Bodhisattva to lose faith and mocked him. The Bodhisattva thought: "Alas! This evil demon Mara wishes to mock me." Thinking thus, he said to the evil demon Mara: "Evil one, do less! What use are worldly affairs to you? Evil one, the Blessed One has also said that karma is the master of worldly beings, the distributor of karma, the birthplace of karma, and the reliance on karma. Evil one, you too are the master of karma, the distributor of karma, the birthplace of karma, and the reliance on karma. Evil one, go back the way you came! By mocking me, you will only bring yourself meaningless, harmful, and painful experiences for a long time." He thus admonished him. That evil demon Mara thought: "My mind is mind

Having perceived it with feeling, it will disappear and become invisible at that moment. Thus, even if all the maras or all the gods of the mara class mock the Bodhisattva and separate him from faith, he will not change, will not be discouraged, and will not be disheartened. Thus, the Bodhisattva is a diamond-like diligent one. How is the Bodhisattva an unseizable diligent one? Here, with what kind of diligence does the Bodhisattva, even other Bodhisattvas who have correctly entered the Mahayana from a long time ago, not even come close to that Bodhisattva in number, not even come close in part, count, and metaphor to cause, let alone the Shravakas and all the Pratyekabuddhas? Because in each arising of mind, he generates the power of diligence, thereby fully grasping all the teachings of the Buddha and thoroughly abandoning all sinful and unwholesome teachings, he initiates diligence in this way. Thus, the Bodhisattva is an unseizable diligent one. How is the Bodhisattva a diligent one who is free from the two extremes? Here, the Bodhisattva does not initiate diligence that is too intense or too weak. Why is that? Because diligence that is too intense becomes hasty, and diligence that is too weak becomes lazy. Thus, the Bodhisattva is a diligent one who is free from the two extremes. How is the Bodhisattva a great diligent one? Here, the Bodhisattva initiates diligence in this way: Just as the body of the Tathagata is, so too will my body become like that. Whatever is the invisible crown of the Tathagata, the light a fathom, the perfect marks and excellent signs, the unobstructed and boundless wisdom, the greatness of the Buddha, and the supreme excellence of the Buddha, I too will possess. He initiates diligence in this way. Thus, the Bodhisattva is a great diligent one. How is the Bodhisattva a burning diligent one? Son of good family, for example, like gold or precious jewels

O great one, that which is free from all stains and faults is radiant, united, and resounding. That is the gold of Alala burning! It is called the precious jewel of Alala burning. Similarly, the bodhisattva's diligence is also free from all stains and faults of diligence. What are the stains and faults of diligence? Laziness is the stain and fault of diligence. Negligence is the stain and fault of diligence. Not knowing moderation in food is the stain and fault of diligence. Not knowing oneself is the stain and fault of diligence. Being improper is the stain and fault of diligence. Being unreasonable is the stain and fault of diligence. Distraction is a stain and fault of diligence. These are called the stains of diligence and the faults of diligence. These are not present in the bodhisattva. Therefore, his diligence is burning and without stain, bright and completely pure, and completely purified. Thus, the bodhisattva is one who possesses burning diligence. How is the bodhisattva one who possesses continuous diligence? Here, the bodhisattva exerts diligence in all activities, striving in such a way that the body does not become weary and the mind does not become weary. Such effort is called the bodhisattva's continuous diligence. Thus, the bodhisattva is one who possesses continuous diligence. How is the bodhisattva one who possesses perfectly pure diligence? Thus, for one who possesses continuous diligence, whatever sinful, unwholesome dharmas obstruct the path to enlightenment and are harmful are abandoned. Whatever wholesome dharmas are in accordance with nirvana, in accordance with the accumulations of the path to enlightenment, and the limbs of enlightenment that lead to enlightenment, increase, expand, and become vast. In this, even a small, subtle unwholesome thought does not arise, let alone a large one. This is called perfectly pure diligence. Thus, the bodhisattva is one who possesses perfectly pure diligence.
