Even a small spark can cause a person to die. Monks, even a great poison can cause a person to die. Similarly, even a small sin can cause one to go to the lower realms, and even a great sin can cause one to go to the lower realms. Thinking thus, and fully realizing this, one is afraid of faults. Thus, a Bodhisattva is afraid of faults. How does a Bodhisattva view fear? Here, a Bodhisattva is trusted by Brahmins, Kshatriyas, townspeople, and villagers. Brahmins, Kshatriyas, townspeople, and villagers offer pearls, gold, jewels, mani jewels, vaidurya, conch shells, coral, red coral, and other forms of wealth and possessions to that unique Bodhisattva, but the Bodhisattva does not generate greed. If the Bodhisattva is assigned to work for the sake of stupas or the Sangha's possessions, he does not live off those possessions. He thinks thus: The Bhagavan has also said that even if a Bodhisattva eats the flesh from his own body, he should not use another's food, drink, or any form of utensil without giving or permission. Thus, the Bodhisattva views fear. How is a Bodhisattva steadfast in accepting properly? Here, even if a Bodhisattva is tormented by Mara or gods of Mara's retinue, or tempted by wealth and sexual pleasures, he does not waver, change, or degenerate. Thus, the Bodhisattva is steadfast in accepting properly. How is a Bodhisattva a non-abiding moralist? Here, when a Bodhisattva keeps the precepts, he does not generate the thought: May I become a god through this precept, or become a certain god, or become a king, or become a certain king. Thus, the Bodhisattva is a non-abiding moralist. Son of good family, how does a Bodhisattva completely purify the three circles?

is a virtuous one, then what is it that a Bodhisattva is completely purified by body? He is completely purified by speech and mind. How is he completely purified by body? He completely abandons all evil deeds done by the body. What are these evil deeds done by the body? They are, for example, killing, taking what is not given, and engaging in sexual misconduct. Thus, he is completely purified by body. How is he completely purified by speech? He completely abandons all evil deeds done by speech. What are these evil deeds done by speech? They are, for example, lying, slander, harsh words, and idle talk. Thus, he is completely purified by speech. How is he completely purified by mind? He completely abandons all evil deeds done by mind. What are these evil deeds done by mind? They are, for example, covetousness, malice, and wrong views. Thus, he is completely purified by mind. Son of good family, thus a Bodhisattva is a virtuous one with completely purified three wheels. Son of good family, if he possesses these ten dharmas, the Bodhisattva is one who has perfect virtue. Son of good family, if he possesses ten dharmas, the Bodhisattva is one who has perfect patience. What are the ten? They are, for example, perfect inner patience, perfect outer patience, perfect patience with the Dharma, perfect patience granted by the Buddha, perfect patience that is not temporary, perfect patience without difference, perfect patience that does not consider needs, perfect patience that is not disturbed, perfect patience of compassion, and perfect patience that liberates from vows. Son of good family, how is a Bodhisattva perfectly patient inwardly? Son of good family, here a Bodhisattva, whatever is inward

of sorrow, uttering groans and lamentations, suffering, unpleasantness, and conflict, enduring and accepting those, without ever tiring. In this way, a Bodhisattva is inwardly perfect in patience. How is a Bodhisattva outwardly perfect in patience? Here, a Bodhisattva, whether hearing evil words from his mother, or from his father, or from a relative, or from a Khenpo, or from a teacher, or hearing others speak ill of the Buddha, Dharma, or Sangha, does not become angry, does not harbor malice, and does not hold grudges. Enduring and accepting those, and not having a strong intention to harm. In this way, a Bodhisattva is outwardly perfect in patience. How is a Bodhisattva perfect in patience with the Dharma? Here, a Bodhisattva, hearing the Dharma taught by the Tathagata in the profound Sutras, which cuts off the lineage, the incomparable liberation from union, such as: all Dharmas are peaceful from the beginning, all Dharmas are naturally in Nirvana. Hearing these, he does not fear, does not panic, and does not become frightened. He thinks like this: if one does not understand or has not heard these Dharmas, one cannot realize the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment. Therefore, whoever holds, thinks, meditates, fully understands, and believes in these Dharmas, this is called patience with the Dharma. In this way, a Bodhisattva is perfect in patience with the Dharma. How is a Bodhisattva perfect in the patience granted by the Buddha? Here, when a Bodhisattva has a thought of anger or a thought of harm, he thinks like this: where does this anger come from? Where does it cease? From where does it arise? How does it arise? For what purpose does it arise? Thus, he fully observes. After he has fully examined it in that way, he does not truly see the arising of anger, nor does he truly see the cessation, nor does he truly see from where it arises, nor does he truly see how it arises, by what cause it arises.
