All are understood by sound. For those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, there is no act of obscuring the sound. Manjushri, those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, also abide in this samadhi, and all Buddha lands are understood by sound, and they do not obscure me either. Manjushri, I abide in this samadhi, and I also answer those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, also abide in this samadhi, and they also answer me. Manjushri, it is like this, for example, a person leaves here and goes to a large and wide city, and they talk to each other, and when they talk to each other, if the sound of a bell rings, Manjushri, what do you think? Can one bell make another bell understand? Or can the sound of the previous bell be known by the other later bell? Or do they hear each other or know everything? Manjushri replied: Bhagavat, the sound of the previous bell is not heard or known by the later bell. Why is that? Bhagavat, because the bell has no discriminating wisdom, and the absence of discriminating wisdom is the question of the mind's correct debate. Manjushri, furthermore, in the eastern direction, there is a Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, named Samantaprabha, and I said to him: Where does the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha Samantaprabha abide and manifest the unexcelled perfect and complete enlightenment? After saying this, the Tathagata Samantaprabha said to me: Relying on perception, I manifested the unexcelled perfect and complete enlightenment. I said to him: How do you rely on perception to manifest the unexcelled perfect and complete enlightenment? He said to me: What is it like to abide in perception? After saying this, Manjushri, I said to that Tathagata: There is no abiding in perception. He said: In that case, without abiding, I

Having attained the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, fully awakened. Manjushri, furthermore, the Tathagata All-Light also said this to me: Where does the Tathagata, the supreme of the Shakya kings, Shakyamuni, reside, having attained the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, fully awakened? After saying this, Manjushri, I said this to that Tathagata: Where does the Tathagata reside, giving predictions to the Bodhisattvas for unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment? I reside in that place, having attained the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, fully awakened. This is the question of truly discerning with the mind. Manjushri, furthermore, in the eastern direction, there is a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Complete Buddha, named Lord of All Protection, Cloud's自在Lamp, I said this to him: Where does the Tathagata Lord of All Protection, Cloud's自在Lamp, reside, having attained the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, fully awakened? He said this to me: I reside in the inconceivable realm, having attained the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, fully awakened. Manjushri, furthermore, that Tathagata said this to me: Where does the Tathagata, the supreme of the Shakya kings, Shakyamuni, reside, having attained the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, fully awakened? I said to him: I reside in the realm of sentient beings, having attained the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, fully awakened. Then, Manjushri, the youth, said this to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, where does what is called the realm of sentient beings reside? After saying this, the Bhagavan said this to Manjushri, the youth: Manjushri, therefore, in order for you to understand that very meaning, an example should be given. Through the example, some people may also understand the meaning that is spoken. Manjushri, for example, a magician or a disciple of a magician.

If a wise person conjures up in the sky above a host of elephants, a host of horsemen, a host of chariots, a host of infantry, and human bodies coming and going, or completely displays a host of fourfold armies, what do you think, Manjushri? Where does that host of fourfold armies reside? Is anything visible there where the host of armies is displayed? Manjushri replied: Bhagavan, it is not so. If there is no host of armies there at all, how could it appear, or where could it reside, or how could it be manifest? Manjushri, similarly, if a being or something designated as a being does not exist at all, how could it reside there, or how could it be manifest? Manjushri, abiding in such a state, I have awakened to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. This is the question about the true discernment of the mind. When this teaching was spoken, six myriads of kotis of gods in the desire realm and the form realm obtained a pure Dharma eye, free from dust and defilement, with respect to the dharmas. Thirty-two hundred thousand brahmins with excessive pride generated wisdom without excessive pride. Four hundred thousand gods generated acceptance of the Dharma of non-arising. Then, at that time, the Bhagavan smiled. This is the nature of the Buddhas, the Bhagavatans, when they smile. At that time, various and manifold rays of light, such as blue, yellow, red, white, madder, crystal, and silver, emanated from the Bhagavan's mouth, and those rays pervaded the boundless and limitless realms of the world, reaching up to the world of Brahma, and then returned, circumambulating the Bhagavan three times, and disappeared into the crown of the Bhagavan's head. As soon as the Bhagavan smiled, the entire three-thousandfold great thousand world system was illuminated by light and greatly adorned. Then, Manjushri, become a youth, said to the Bhagavan: The Buddhas, the Bhagavatans, do not smile without a cause or reason.
