Those vast beings who abide in the supreme, inconceivable wisdom of the Buddha are able to know, but children, those with egoistic notions, those diminished by pride, and those of little wisdom are not able to know. Therefore, listen well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Householders, please consider an analogy. If this three-thousand great thousand world system has a billion surrounding mountains, a billion suns revolve and exist within it, and a billion moons revolve and exist within it. Householders, this three-thousand great thousand world system is completely surrounded by great surrounding mountains, and within this three-thousand great thousand world system, all sentient beings designated as such, without precedence, attain human bodies. And in that world, there exists the earth element, and grass like jewels, trees, branches, leaves, and petals are closely held, and all the mountains, and in those, the earth element exists, and as much as the four great elements exist, from the earth element, if these are broken down into particles of dust, householders, what do you think? Are those particles of dust many or few? Thus the Blessed One asked. Those householders replied to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, those particles of dust are very many. The particles of dust are exceedingly many. Blessed One, those particles of dust are immeasurable." Householders, consider another analogy. If sentient beings become as many as those particles of dust, and those sentient beings also attain human bodies without precedence. And all of them, having attained human bodies, also go forth. All of them, having gone forth, also attain the state of Arhat. They manifest their superknowledges, and with the power of the six superknowledges, those great Shravakas, as many as there are, just as many world systems as there are, a single Shravaka can traverse with just a snap of the fingers. Householders, if these great Shravakas transcend for hundreds of years in this way, householders, what do you think? How many worlds would these great Shravakas transcend over hundreds of years? They replied: Blessed One, the worlds that these great Shravakas transcend are immeasurable. Blessed One, these worlds are countless. The Buddha said: Having fully examined and approached, all those worlds, however many, that these great Shravakas transcend over hundreds of years, become one great city. That great city is as long as it is wide, and its height is also the same. Householders, what do you think? Is the area of that city's wall large? They replied: Blessed One, that city is very large. Sugata, that city is boundless. Blessed One, how wonderful it is to perfectly seek such examples! Householders, if that great city were filled to the brim with mustard seeds, would those mustard seeds be many? They replied: Blessed One, those mustard seeds are many. Sugata, very many. The Buddha said: Householders, even more numerous and countless than that are the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones, who are speaking about the Tathagata, speaking about the Dharma, and also correctly speaking about this category of Dharma. Having said this, those householders said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, it is truly amazing that the Tathagata seeks such subtle and distant examples!
