Why is "awakening" called "Bodhi"? Because it is a lion. What is a lion? It is fearlessness. Why is it called fearlessness? Because the great king has transcended fear. For those who are fearless, why are they called "Tathagata Tathagata"? Because there is coming and going. Therefore, they are called "Tathagata Tathagata." Great king, why else is it called "Tathagata"? Thus, there is neither going nor not going, therefore it is called "Tathagata." Great king, why is it called "Buddha's debate" and "Tathagata's debate"? Because he realizes that all dharmas have nowhere to go. How does he realize? He realizes it as he realizes that there is no coming and going. After he said this, King Prasenajit of Kosala said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, this profound Dharma teaching is truly rare! Blessed One, by teaching this Dharma, how many beings will surely turn towards the unexcelled, perfect, complete, and right Bodhi? How many abide in the position of a Shravaka? How many abide in the position of a Pratyekabuddha? The Blessed One replied: Great king, thus, whatever I am teaching, whatever I will teach, whatever I am speaking about the Dharma, and whatever Dharma I have awakened to perfect and complete enlightenment, for this Dharma teaching, there are no beings who will surely turn towards it. It is not abiding for the sake of a Shravaka, nor is it abiding for the sake of a Pratyekabuddha. Great king, for example, a magician or a skilled disciple of a magician conjures up an army with four divisions in front of a large crowd, equipping them and gathering them to fight two kings. Great king, of the two kings conjured up by the magician, one king is defeated. Then, where is the other king? He is only fighting on that conjured battlefield.

After the king who manifested on earth was victorious, he spoke these words before the four divisions of the army: "I have defeated the great king! I have pulled out the thorns!" What do you think, great king? What is the defeated king like? He replied: "Bhagavan, the king manifested by the magician has defeated the manifestation of the magician." The Buddha said: "Great king, can a manifestation defeat some manifestations?" He replied: "Bhagavan, no. Why is that? Because the power of manifestation has no substance, and because there is no substance, there is no defeating no substance. Bhagavan, the so-called defeated king and king are the delusion of children." The Buddha said: "Great king, similarly, there is neither victory nor defeat in the nature of all dharmas. Because dharma is only abiding, the realm of dharma is abiding. Dharma is without fault. Therefore, the Tathagata is a speaker of truth, a speaker of thusness, a speaker of non-perversion, a speaker of non-otherness. He subsequently applies names to all dharmas as unborn. Great king, just as children grasp, so the Tathagata teaches what is called unmanifestable. Great king, the Tathagata is the true cessation of all names. Why is it said that the Tathagata is the true cessation of all names? Because all names are equal. What is equal is cessation. What is cessation is called equality. The true cessation of all these names is the unborn nature of all dharmas. Great king, just as the root of calculation is established, so it should be taught. Great king, for example, showing many billions from one hundred thousand, those billions arise from that one hundred thousand. Great king, for example, in the center of a mirror, many images appear, but the center of the mirror does not have those images. Great king, for example, within one letter, many letters appear."

Even if destroyed, those letters do not appear in that letter. Great King, just as a monk with great magical powers transforms from one into many, and from many back into one, similarly, Great King, the Tathagata, having attained power, fearlessness, and all perfections, teaches the Dharma to discipline beings, showing through worldly terms and counting methods that so many beings have been tamed. Great King, how they are tamed, who are tamed, and by what means they are tamed, all abide in the non-duality of the Tathagata. By teaching this Dharma, saying "so many beings have been tamed," this is the unmade, the unchanging, the roaring of the lion. When the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, teaches this teaching, the three-thousand great-thousand world system shakes in six ways: it shakes, it shakes violently, it shakes completely violently. It quakes, it quakes violently, it quakes completely violently. It tilts, it tilts violently, it tilts completely violently. Then, King Prasenajit of Kosala asked the Blessed One, "Blessed One, what is the cause and condition for the great earthquake in the world?" The Blessed One replied, "Great King, when the Tathagata teaches this teaching, eighty trillion deities of the desire realm and the form realm develop the pure Dharma eye, free from dust and defilement, regarding phenomena. Ninety trillion deities develop tolerance for the unborn Dharma. Sixty thousand Brahmins develop the pure Dharma eye, free from dust and defilement, regarding phenomena. Eighty thousand sentient beings, including gods and humans, develop the pure Dharma eye regarding phenomena. Sixty thousand human beings develop tolerance for the unborn Dharma. Eight thousand sentient beings manifest the fruit of non-returning. Great King, that is the cause and condition for the great earthquake in the world.
