Offered to the Bhagavan. Having offered, he then pleaded to the Bhagavan thus: "Bhagavan, this precious garment of mine is accomplished from the ripening of past deeds, without defect, beautiful, without fault, suitable for my own body. This was not seized from anyone by my power, but was manifestly accomplished from previous good use. Please, Bhagavan, accept it." Then, the householder Anathapindika thought to himself: "Thus, the king of Kosala has fully used this precious garment and offered it to the Bhagavan." Then, the king of Kosala, Prasenajit, through the power of the Bhagavan, knew the thoughts of the householder Anathapindika with his mind, and pleaded to the Bhagavan thus: "Bhagavan, this precious garment of mine, such a thought of offering it to the Bhagavan had not arisen before. Having seen the Bhagavan, the thought arose, so for the sake of compassion, please, Bhagavan, accept this precious garment. Bhagavan, this mind is quickly changing, and Bhagavan, those Tathagatas are difficult to encounter. Like the Udumbara flower, it is exceedingly difficult to encounter, so the thought of offering it arose. Having pleased the Bhagavan, at that time I spoke these verses: You are the chief of two-legged beings, merit and splendor are universally supreme. Except for the minds of those with afflictions, who would not feel joy upon seeing you? Those cruel sentient beings who do not worship the Able One will be destroyed. Like the Udumbara flower, illuminating the world, you are rare. Shakya Lion, supreme among humans, protector, I please you today. I long for wisdom, so I make offerings to you today. Whatever Bodhi wisdom is desired, this is the offering to the Buddhas. For the sake of Buddha's wisdom, if I make offerings to the supreme among humans, protector, please accept it. Victorious One, please accept it. For the sake of all sentient beings, I offer you this robe. I have subdued my mind, and since I have conquered stinginess, the dharmas

For the sake of creating the earth, generosity arose in my mind. Then, after the Blessed One accepted the robe offered by King Prasenajit of Kosala, he said to King Prasenajit: Great King, it is good, it is good that you have generated a vast mind of enlightenment! Great King, therefore, one should strive to practice these four dharmas. What are the four? Great King, for example, a king of royal lineage, who has been empowered from the crown of his head, having obtained power and diligence in the country, should go to the shramanas and brahmins who possess morality, and should inquire of them completely, and should strive to protect and defend the teachings of the Tathagata, and should rejoice in order to seek the profound dharma with faith, and should rejoice in order to ascertain the truth by being free from wrong views. Great King, one should strive to practice these four dharmas. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the Sugata spoke thus, and the Teacher also spoke thus: To the monks who possess morality, always be respectful, and inquire about all things, thereby wisdom will increase. Respect for the monks, the deeds done are virtuous, just as it is pure, so will his mind become pure. Protecting the teachings is always protecting from all sides. With this first limb, the body will surely become pure. If the royal lineages always listen to and abide in the profound dharma, they will desire to hear it again, and will seek it again and again. Having heard the profound dharma, they will not practice evil deeds. The king, being free from wrong views, will know the true dharma. Having known the profound dharma, he will not practice evil deeds, and because he is free from all sins, therefore, O King, you are particularly excellent. If the four great royal lineages always rely on these four supreme dharmas, they will not go to the lower realms, and it will not be difficult for them to obtain a good rebirth. They will quickly see the Buddha, and will also hear the dharma from him, and will know the profound dharma spoken by the perfectly enlightened Buddha. Relying on these four dharmas,

If the mind causes enlightenment to increase, like the waxing moon, its wisdom will increase. If the mind causes enlightenment to increase, and seeks the supreme Dharma, then the two-legged noble, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, is worthy as the holy one of the world. He is the most supreme of all Dharmas, the expounder of the supreme Dharma. Having made offerings to him, one will surely attain the supreme vehicle. Any king or royal lineage who desires to seek the supreme Dharma should repeatedly rely on the four Dharmas. Other great kings should also distinguish the supreme Dharma for the sake of sentient beings. Great king, what is the supreme Dharma? Great king, the supreme Dharma is that all Dharmas are not to be grasped. Who is not to be grasped? Great king, since no one grasps, therefore all Dharmas are not to be grasped. Great king, what is meant by all Dharmas, all Dharmas? Great king, all those Dharmas are not Dharma, therefore they are called all Dharmas, all Dharmas. How are they not Dharma? Great king, however much one practices, that much is not the concept of Dharma. Great king, the term 'not the concept of Dharma' means the arising of ignorance. If one focuses on concept, it becomes non-concept. Great king, if concept transforms, it becomes non-concept. Great king, the term 'concept' is a designation. Great king, the term 'concept' is attachment. Great king, if there is concept, it is called a child. Great king, the term 'child' is where the child dwells. Why is it called where the child dwells? Because it is where the child dwells. From where does it dwell? It dwells from concept. What is that concept? It is like this: clinging to self, clinging to existence, clinging to sentient beings, from clinging to form to clinging to consciousness, clinging to the eye, clinging to the ear, clinging to the nose, clinging to the tongue, clinging to the body, clinging to the mind, up to all concepts.
