The explanation of the Great Sutra called the Great Drum begins. Then, from the sky came the praise of the assembly of gods and the assembly of dragons, saying: Light Protector, well done, well done! For the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, now the gods and the assembly of dragons are also raining down flowers, and also raining down a great stream of pollen rain filled with nectar. Light Protector, you are born from the mouth and heart of the Blessed One, and you should be the eldest son of the Tathagata. Then, the assembly of gods and the assembly of dragons spoke this verse in unison: In the city of Shravasti, when the great drum and the very great drum and conch shells are sounded, the Protector, the Lord of Dharma, sounds the great drum of Dharma in the Victory Garden. Light Protector, you should beat the drum of Dharma, listen to the sutras spoken by the Kings of Dharma, and when you beat the great drum of Dharma with reverence, the god of gods will cut off many doubts. The chapter called Light Protector's Arrival from the Great Drum Sutra ends. Then, the Blessed One said to the great elder Light Protector: Light Protector, I said earlier in this sutra that there was a monk named Delightful who had faith in the vast Sangha, that was the name of that monk. Bhikshu or Bhikshuni, Upasaka or Upasika, whichever sentient beings hear it, all those sentient beings' arrows of desire, hatred, and ignorance will be removed. What is the reason for that? Light Protector, for example, the King of Kosala, King Prasenajit, has a physician named Jivaka, the son of a healer. When King Prasenajit goes to war with the enemy army, when the king prepares for battle, he summons the physician Jivaka, and after summoning him, he says this: Physician, with what medicine can the poison arrows of those sentient beings who have been wounded by poison arrows be removed? Now go and prepare it quickly and bring it here. Then, the physician Jivaka, carrying the king of medicines, the poison medicine arrow, when the great king enters the battlefield

Having smeared and fumigated the great drum with that medicine, it was beaten. The moment it was smeared, fumigated, and beaten, those beings who were tormented by pain, having heard that sound for one yojana or two yojanas, merely by hearing it, all the pain of those beings would be removed, the pain would be eliminated. Light Protector, similarly, whatever beings hear the name of that faithful one who has faith in the vast one, all their pain of desire, hatred, and ignorance will be removed. Why is that? Because he has extracted and expanded this sutra for my teachings, therefore it is the power of the one who has manifested the Dharma. Light Protector, look! For a while, even the king's great drum, which is inanimate and ordinary, when an animate being smears and fumigates it with medicine and beats it, it brings benefit to beings. What need is there to mention that hearing the name of a Bodhisattva, a great Bodhisattva, a faithful one who has faith in the vast one, will separate the three kinds of afflictions of beings? If that is the case, for a while, hearing the name of a Bodhisattva will separate the pain of desire, hatred, and ignorance of beings, then what need is there to mention paying homage to the Bhagavan Shakyamuni, reciting the names of all the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, or fully proclaiming their qualities? If that is the case, merely the name of the Bhagavan Shakyamuni will separate the pain of desire, hatred, and ignorance of beings, then what need is there to mention that a teacher who shows benefit to beings, explains from this Great Drum Sutra, or verses, or a few words, or merely the name, or proclaims a chapter, will separate the pain of desire, hatred, and ignorance of beings? Why is that? I have said, monks, the aspiration of a mind endowed with morality will be fulfilled, because the aspiration has been well practiced before. This is the Dharma nature of all the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, that is, the Great Drum Sutra has not been made, has not arisen, and has not ceased. Light Protector, you also do that.
