The Noble Great Drum Sound Chapter, also known as the Great Vehicle Sutra. The Noble Great Drum Sound Chapter, also known as the Great Vehicle Sutra. In Sanskrit: Ārya Mahābherīhārakaparivartanāma Mahāyāna Sūtra. In Tibetan: The Noble Great Drum Sound Chapter, also known as the Great Vehicle Sutra. Volume 1. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, in Anathapindika's Garden, together with a great Sangha of one thousand two hundred and fifty monks. And also together with many hundreds of thousands of Bodhisattvas. And also together with many gods, nagas, yakshas, and gandharvas. And also together with many hundreds of thousands of laymen and laywomen. And also together with Brahma, the lord of the Saha world, Indra, the lord of the gods, and the four guardians of the world. This being so, together with many monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, and numerous Bodhisattvas gathered from the ten directions of the world. At that time, the Tathagata taught the Dharma as follows: Among the four assemblies, such Dharma words as these: The happiness and suffering of existence, neither end nor permanence exist. Therefore, to abandon happiness and suffering, Nirvana is the supreme bliss. Thus he taught. Here it is said: Why does the Blessed One, the Tathagata, dwell with about five hundred monks? The reason for this should be stated. Why is the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with many retinues, the lord of many retinues, the retinue always inseparable, possessing rare Dharma and many miracles, thus his fame spreads far and wide? If so, not limited to five hundred retinues, the Blessed One should become one with hundreds of thousands of retinues. Again, here it is said: Possessing the power of mastery over all disciplines, therefore, in Shravasti, the Tathagata dwells with five hundred monks, thus the words are spoken. Just as a mother carries her child and goes from her own country to another country, her own

Just as one says "this village is near" to please a child. Someone asked: Is it that the Blessed One Buddha, those who protect beings, are together with about five hundred monks? To them he said: Monks, this Dharma story has been repeated three times. Therefore, it should be known that these five hundred monks are the leaders of the assembly, and there is no other meaning. For example, just as each chief of a herd has a herd of cattle, so too does a chief of men have five hundred disciples. Each one has five hundred disciples. Therefore, they are called five hundred great Shravakas. For example, Mahakashyapa and so on, as well as Ananda and so on, all five hundred great Shravakas are Arhats, those who have exhausted the outflows, without afflictions, those who have become masters, great elephants, knowers, those whose minds are completely liberated, those whose wisdom is completely liberated, who have done what was to be done, who have accomplished what was to be accomplished, who have cast off the burden, who have attained their own benefit, who have completely exhausted the bonds of existence, those whose minds are completely liberated by correct knowledge, who have attained the perfection of all the powers of the mind, the non-learners, and those who have entered the stream, the once-returners, and those who abide in the fruit of non-returning, and so on, immeasurable ones, and many assemblies of monks with the nature of exhausting the outflows, and bodhisattvas, great beings, endowed with hundreds of thousands of qualities, immeasurable and countless, those who have come from the ten directions, the measure of whom, except for Manjushri, neither a calculator nor a disciple of a calculator can count, nor can Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Bodhisattvas, great beings, who have obtained great power, and bodhisattvas, great beings, Avalokiteshvara, and Manjushri who has become a youth, and bodhisattvas, great beings, Maitreya and so on, and immeasurable and countless assemblies of bodhisattvas, just as when a great tree is felled, the bark of the tree comes off, so too the bodhisattvas who have been peeled like bark from this great earth

Those immeasurable and countless multitudes, their number is also the calculator, or those belonging to the foremost of calculators cannot express it exhaustively, and there are numerous wind gods, and the assembly of nuns, they are Dema and so on, and the Mother of Holding Beasts, Saga, and Queen Flower Garland Mother and so on, and numerous female lay practitioners, and male lay practitioners such as Good Giving and so on. The Bhagavan Tathagata dwells in the center of all these numerous retinues, and the Bhagavan reveals the Dharma gate of the Dharma. Then, at that time, King Prasenajit of Kosala arose from his own bed and thought: I should go before the Bhagavan. Then he arose from his own bed, and when the king arrived, the great drums were beaten, the conches were blown, and numerous umbrellas, victory banners, and flags were raised, shining everywhere like the sunlight in the sky. The Bhagavan knowingly asked, and then the Bhagavan said to Ananda: Ananda, what is the sound of these great drums and the sound of the conches? Ananda replied: Bhagavan, the noble King Prasenajit, the protector of the earth, has come here, and he is beating the great drums, making a great sound. The Bhagavan asked: Ananda, why is the sound of the drums being made? He replied: The king, the protector of the Shakyas, has come to visit, in order to make his army understand that they should request some Dharma before the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan said: Ananda, you also beat the drum of the Dharma and blow the conch of the Dharma, and I will expound the Dharma sutra called the Great Drum. He replied: Bhagavan, I have never heard of the sutra called the Great Drum before, what is this Dharma called the Great Drum? The Bhagavan said: Ananda, do you think you can know? For the time being, the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who have come from the ten directions, all of them do not know even four letters of this Great Drum Sutra, how can you know, having never seen or heard it before? He replied: Bhagavan
