Named "Thus It Is," this sutra is called "Words of Intent." O Sustainer, this non-contradictory sutra, pure and luminous, must be understood by beings of inferior intelligence through hundreds of thousands of causes and reasons. O Sustainer, therefore, you should briefly observe this assembly. Then, at that time, the great Sustainer observed what kind of beings had gathered there. Then, in that very instant, the beings who were not vast, as well as those of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer vehicles, and those newly entering the Bodhisattva vehicle, all blamed themselves, saying: For example, in a great gathering of giants, a king's giant who can conquer a thousand rises from his seat and proclaims: Who is there here who is worthy and able to fight with me? Then, all the beings in that place who are not worthy to fight blame themselves, saying: We will be killed; we are not able to fight with him. Having thus blamed themselves, they all remain silent. Then, if he does not find any giant opponents there, then he becomes an invincible hero and giant in that place, and raises a victory banner. Likewise, in that place, the beings who are not kings, as well as those of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer vehicles, and the Bodhisattvas who have newly entered the vehicle, likewise (blame themselves), saying: We are not able to realize this sutra, which teaches that the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have passed into complete nirvana, but I am constant, firm, peaceful, and real. They will abandon it. Why is that? Because they are those who have long cultivated views that cause the Teacher's views to decline. Having heard this pure sutra, beings of inferior intelligence will depart. From the ten directions, those who have gathered from those places, the Hearers and Solitary Realizer vehicles, and those newly entering the Bodhisattva vehicle, whoever they may be, whoever has gathered with them, of those, one-tenth, one-hundredth, one-thousandth, one-hundred-thousandth, one-millionth, one-immeasurable part, they will all gather. Here, praise

What kind of lay practitioners are like solid wood, not like hollow tree trunks? That is, those who possess the five precepts, the eight precepts, take the three refuges, the fourteen precepts, the fifteen precepts, and even the half-month fast, the eighth-day fast, the half-month fast of the month of miracles, fully observe the eight branches of the fast, and possess the four means of gathering: generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and cooperation. Suppose there is a famine for ten or twelve years, or even longer, I will divide my food or drink, which I eat or lick, in half to support my parents, and half to offer to the Sangha. I will not abandon the offering of worship to the Sangha. Then, how much merit will this virtuous man have in a bad time? Even if this brave man gets one meal in half a month, he will give this only meal to the Sangha, and thus become a person with inexhaustible merit. When a wise man gives in this way in the world, he becomes a supreme person, therefore, a person who desires good should not be negligent. Therefore, being respectful to the Dharma is the most supreme. Wealth will be exhausted by enemies, thieves, and many other factors, as well as kings, water, fire, friends, unfriendly relatives, unequal distribution, and excessive consumption, and even evil deeds. However, for those who use wealth for themselves and their own enjoyment, and those who are wasted and damaged by others, the wealth used for the sacred Dharma will never be exhausted. Exhausted in this life, it will not be exhausted in the next life. It increases in this world, and will not be exhausted in the next world, and can bring beauty and strength. All who see it rejoice, and can obtain wealth, and appearance and fame will become very prominent. His livestock will not be exhausted, his male and female servants, craftsmen, and all work will not decline. He will not have quarrels, fights, and gambling, he will never have malice, and will obtain the most supreme achievement. A person who is happy to give in the world can obtain the merits mentioned above. Therefore, a person who always desires the Dharma will meet with all the Buddhas. Body
