Venerable Kashyapa, the Tathagata, with compassion, has taken us in, please expound this great sutra well. The great Kashyapa said: How can one believe? They said: Venerable Kashyapa, for example, if a man is born at the age of twenty and says that he has a hundred-year-old son, if the Tathagata speaks in the same way, we will also believe in the same way, Venerable Kashyapa, let alone hearing the true Dharma. Why is that? Because the Tathagata does what he says, the Tathagata possesses all eyes, the Tathagata sees with the Buddha's eye. Venerable Kashyapa, moreover, we are also known by the Tathagata. He said: Wise ones, you are fit to hear, recite, uphold, and proclaim this Great Drum Sutra. The Blessed One said: Kashyapa, just as a man born at the age of twenty has a hundred-year-old son, this Great Drum Sutra is also similar to that. Why is that? Light, for example, King Bright feeds elephants, horses, and soldiers with food, things to eat, things to drink, things to lick, and so on. What is the reason for that? When I myself make the sound of the big drum, pottery drum, and conch, raise the umbrella, victory banner, and flags, and when a large gathering of other armies approaches. At that time, I remember the benefits of feeding, and I will fight with other armies, and at that time I will also benefit sentient beings. It will also benefit my command, thinking so, those will also do the same. Light, similarly, even if I completely pass away into Nirvana, you will also utter this Great Drum Sutra, so I have laid out half of the seat for you, be sure to do so. He asked: Venerable One, I am of the lineage of the eldest son born from your heart. He said: Light, for example, King Bright of Kosala says to his sons: These people will inherit my lineage in the future, let them study various treatises and crafts. Similarly, Light, you will also utter this sutra after I pass away. Those who are not alarmed, afraid, or terrified on the battlefield, the king will bestow upon them food, dwellings, sustenance, drink, clothing, ornaments, canopies, and utensils. Furthermore, to those soldiers who engage in battle and fight, he will grant gold, jewels, pearls, and so forth, as well as towns and lands. There, those brave warriors who, together with their armies, never retreat, possessing elephant troops, cavalry, and chariots, thereby vanquishing the enemy forces, the king himself will recognize them and bestow upon them the coronation of the crown prince. Light Protector, similarly, to my Shravaka monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen, those who have well-learned the precepts as they have been established, and those who are bound by the vows of individual liberation, abide by the monastic code, and conduct themselves accordingly, the Tathagata will grant them the bliss of gods and humans. Furthermore, to those who defeat the demon of the aggregates, the demon of afflictions, the demon of death, and the demon of the sons of the gods, the Tathagata will crown them with the crown of liberation from the four noble truths.
