At that time, when the Tathāgata, the friend of the world, appeared with many countless and immeasurable perfections, at that time, in that moment, this great sutra expounded the one vehicle. At that time, abandoning all these and those others, gathering all those together, they would act with anger, reviling, and exposing faults. Then, regarding those, I thought, "These are my sons, my students, it won't do if they exceed the time limit. How can I bring these to peace, I should devise a skillful means to tame them." Then, having understood their strength and weakness, I spoke such words. To those who did not believe in the Mahāyāna, I spoke of the Śrāvakayāna. Son of good family, the ultimate is like this, this is the Mahāyāna, the rest is the vehicle to be abandoned. Women, even if they practice well, cannot attain liberation, and so it is with city dwellers. Riding a swift horse and running, one can quickly reach a village or city, but if a child walks step by step, will he not also reach it? Just as a young child eats butter and food with his fingers, while a strong person fills a container and eats, so too, Kāśyapa, I gathered those who did not want the Mahāyāna, and at that time, like a son sweeping a pile of dust with a broom, I closely showed the Mahāyāna with the Śrāvakayāna. Those who instantly created the karma of slander, if they also entered the Mahāyāna through my previous loving-kindness, then on that same body, some would be completely exhausted by leprosy, or sorrow, or just feeling unwell. At that time, those who did not listen to my words and did not accept my words would be harmed by impropriety. Kāśyapa, just like a son sweeping a pile of dust with a broom, all those Śrāvakas are also my sons, and now they will be known. Alas, how wonderful, O Bhagavan, we are still searching for our parents, so the Śrāvakayāna is now the worst. The Bhagavan said: Kāśyapa, that is why I

Now you will know, do what you want to do, do not abandon the foundation. If you cannot do it, then let it go. Kashyapa, you should teach in this way, even if they are angry or revile, you should be patient. For example, there is a river, a pond, a small lake, a puddle, a pool, or a well, and whether it is a man, woman, boy, girl, or any sentient being, they come with whatever kind of container, and they take water according to their capacity, filling the water bottle with water, the earthenware pot with earthenware, and cupping their hands to drink, as long as the container is not broken, there will be no loss. Son of good family, would you be angry because someone cupped their hands or used a water bottle to take water? Or would you be angry because of emptiness? Similarly, son of good family, you should increase your own strength, enter the Hearer Vehicle, and do not be displeased or give up because we are going to do the Great Vehicle. Furthermore, for example, the king eats rice and curry, the hungry ghosts and the poor eat fruits and roots, and the householder eats his own property, would they blame the king for this? Whoever does what, and obtains happiness or suffering, should abide in that. Similarly, even if you do not have the power to enter the Great Vehicle, why should you prevent it? Furthermore, the king gives away gold, silver, pearls, jewels, lapis lazuli, orpiment, coral, and so on, while the poor give away a handful of food. Those who have heard much will uphold the scriptures, while those with little wisdom will only use what they have learned. Some can run through a large city or many yojanas, while children cannot even run half an arrow-length, would the young children be beaten because they cannot run? Who is to blame? Kashyapa, furthermore, the women of the village like the village, and the women of the city like the city. Kashyapa, similarly, the Tathagata also teaches the Dharma according to the capacity of sentient beings. Furthermore, the great Kashyapa said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, about the Dharma

Please allow me to say something. The Blessed One taught: If asked, from what does the view of sentient beings arise? What is the view of sentient beings? What is it like? The Blessed One taught: Light Protector, for example, from the great city called Champa, some people went to Shravasti. Moreover, they settled in a town not far from the great city of Shravasti. Then, they asked another guest: Hey, friend, how do foreigners live in Shravasti? Can one find lodging, shops, or prostitutes for foreigners to live in there? Then, that person was clever and understood the other person's mind, and with his divine eye, he observed that he was coming, and then he understood. This evil person, disregarding his own mother's hardship, completely abandoned his guru, listened to the words of a liar's son, thinking that I will go to Shravasti and play with prostitutes, and so he came here. That person thought like this in his heart, and then he said to that person: Hey, friend, it is better for you to return quickly. People like you foreigners will be given as food to the rakshasas by King Prasenajit. Hey, friend, go back quickly! Then, that person listened to that person's words, quickly ran back to his home, knelt at his mother's feet, and asked for forgiveness. Later, at another time, that person's mother died, and he took all the property and went to Shravasti again, and that person saw him again. Seeing him, he thought again that he was coming, thinking that I will go there and distribute all the property to the dead, the poor, the destitute, and the beggars, etc., and make offerings, respect, and worship to the Tathagata, and destroy my arrogance. I will gradually become without possessions and without arrogance, and then I will indulge in playing, laughing, and enjoying with prostitutes as much as I want, and then I will become a monk under the teachings of the Tathagata. That person asked that person: Hey, friend, how is the great city of Shravasti these days? He said: Hey, friend, I think the city of Shravasti is both ugly and disgusting, and unpleasant.
