Wanting to do so, he thought to himself: For a while, let me seek out the afflictions and my beginning and end. Will I find anything? He reported: World Honored One, it will not be found. If afflictions are purified, then I will be found afterwards. I will not be found by hearing such sutras, but by relying on skillful means, unwearied, unexamined, intense diligence, and the three paths, and then I will believe in such sutras. Furthermore, Light Protector reported: World Honored One, if I exist, why have these sudden afflictions become like this? The World Honored One said: Light Protector, I will give you an example. Light Protector, for example, if someone learns five letters, but says that he will first understand the meaning of words or verses that are composed of the essence of language before learning, will he understand? If he continues to learn, he will understand afterwards. If he always learns well, when the teacher tells the student about the content composed of the essence of language, he will be able to listen without needing an example, and if he believes in the words composed of the essence of language spoken by his teacher, then he will understand the meaning and believe. Similarly, today I say to sentient beings covered by the dust of afflictions that the son of a noble family has the essence of the Tathagata. If they want to see, can they see it? He reported: World Honored One, it is impossible. Just as the student believes and respects the teacher, and afterwards he will understand the basis of the meaning of the words composed of the essence of language, Light Protector, you should also know that the Tathagata speaks the truth, speaks the words of truth, so even if he says that sentient beings exist, you should understand, and like the student who is accomplished, you will understand afterwards. Light Protector, I will give you another example. Light Protector, these four are the cause of obscuration and the example of reason in the realm of sentient beings, the four are

I, for example, am like eyes blurred by yellow and blue cataracts, like the moon covered by clouds, like digging a well, and like a lamp inside a vase. These four protectors of light are the reasons and grounds for having essence, because these reasons and grounds cause all sentient beings and all creatures to have the Buddha-nature, and when adorned with infinite good marks and signs, it will appear, and this realm will enable sentient beings to attain liberation. The so-called eyes blurred by cataracts refers to being obscured by yellow and blue cataracts and becoming blurred. As long as a doctor has not been found, one will remain blind, but if a doctor is found, one will quickly see again. Just as being obscured by blue cataracts, this realm covered by countless shells of afflictions, as long as the hearers and solitary Buddhas are pleased, I will become non-self, and become my self. When the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are pleased, I will become self, and thereafter become a person who can be tamed. That person's eye disease, whether it is yellow or blue cataracts, should be viewed like afflictions. The Tathagatagarbha is definitely there, like the eyes. The so-called moon covered by clouds refers to how the lunar disc covered by thick clouds cannot be seen, and similarly, the realm covered by the shell of afflictions cannot be seen. When the collection of afflictions dissipates like clouds, then the realm will appear like a full moon. The so-called digging a well, for example, a person digs a well, and while digging, whenever dry earth appears, one thinks that water is still far away from here, but when mud appears, one knows that water is not far from here. When water is reached, the digging is completed. Similarly, the hearers and solitary Buddhas please the Tathagatas, and show practice for the sake of practicing well, afflictions...

Dig it, and after digging, like water, you will find the Tathagatagarbha. The metaphor called the lamp inside a vase is like a lamp inside a vase whose light is not bright, nor clear, and does not benefit sentient beings in any way. Similarly, the spoken Tathagatagarbha, endowed with infinite marks and signs, also does not benefit sentient beings. When the vase is broken, the lamp naturally appears and benefits sentient beings. Likewise, in the vase of samsara, which has countless shells of afflictions, the Tathagatagarbha dwells like a lamp, blazing brightly. When the afflictions of samsara are exhausted, like a lamp from a broken vase, the Tathagata will benefit sentient beings. Through these four reasons, just as I have the nature of sentient beings, so too should it be known that all sentient beings have it as well. The so-called provable nature should be known to be the only one that exists. Just as it was said above, the one hundred and eight reasons, each reason is composed of eight verses. Question: World Honored One, why did the Tathagata teach the three vehicles? Answer: Light Protector, I will give you an example. For example, a wealthy man who has countless riches has an only son who is lost from his mother's hand in a crowd. Then, when the wealthy man is about to die, he thinks, 'My son is lost, and I have no other son, nor father, nor mother, nor siblings born together, nor family. These treasures of mine will be taken by the king.' He thinks this over and over again, and a long time passes. Then, the lost son comes to the same city and enters his own house for food, but he does not know that this house is his father's house. Then, as soon as his father sees him, he knows that this is his own son, but he does not say even a little, 'You are my son.' Why? Because he is afraid that he will run away again, so he gives him a great many treasures. Then, he
