Or, just as I, Light Protector, give to myself or others, when I teach the various sutras of various interests to sentient beings of various inclinations, those who are lazy, immoral, and whose body, speech, and mind are not subdued, abandon the Tathagatagarbha, the sutras of the Buddha's permanence, and study the sutras of the emptiness category. Some of them quote words and letters, and some of them abandon words and letters to each other. Why is that? Because all the Buddha's teachings proclaim emptiness and non-self. Foolish people who do not understand the meaning of emptiness and non-self will decline. Furthermore, emptiness and non-self itself, in the Buddha's teachings, is constantly empty and peaceful with hundreds of millions of afflictions, it is nirvana, and the basis of the words of nirvana itself is the basis of all of them, because the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have attained peaceful and lasting nirvana. Question: Bhagavan, how should annihilation and permanence be understood? Answer: As long as sentient beings wander in samsara, I will intervene, because the meaning of the view of non-self is constant and permanent. If permanence is denied, then constancy will also decline. Bhagavan, furthermore, non-self has existed for a long time, but self has not existed for a long time. Answer: In order to destroy the "self" that worldly people speak of, non-self is proclaimed. If it is not said in the teachings that practice in this way, how can one not become a dead person? It is said that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, proclaims non-self, which is very strange, and then intervenes with hundreds and thousands of reasons and arguments. After intervening in this way, whenever faith arises in the guru and one enters, one will study the Dharma of emptiness, strive and make effort. Then, they proclaim to them that liberation is peaceful, permanent, and has form. Furthermore, some worldly people say that there is liberation, I say that in order to destroy those, there is no liberation at all.

This was said. If the Teacher did not teach as if showing the view of annihilation, how could one have faith in the Teacher's teachings? Therefore, with hundreds of thousands of causes and reasons, he taught the selflessness of liberation being annihilated. Then, if one sees the view of liberation being annihilated, foolish people will fall away, so after that, I also taught with hundreds of thousands of causes and reasons that liberation truly exists. Question: If it is taught that liberation is attained and one is a lord, then beings should also exist and be known as permanent. Why is that? Like smoke following fire, if liberation is a real self, then saying liberation is self will be like saying it is something with form. But it is not like the worldly view of aggregates, nor is it like saying annihilation and permanence. Kashyapa also asked, "Venerable One, even the Tathagatas do not have complete Nirvana, so why do you teach complete Nirvana in this way, and if there is no arising, why do you teach birth? Beings will temporarily think that even the Buddha is mistaken, let alone us. If even the Buddha does not have control over the self, then what need is there to speak of us who are bound by self-grasping and grasping at what is mine?" For example, a king under the sun captures a king, puts him in chains, and imprisons him in a prison. Then he thinks, "I am a king, I am a lord," and then says again, "I am not a king, what suffering is there other than carelessness?" Likewise, as long as one wanders in samsara, one sees oneself as "I am the self," and this is the meaning of seeing no-self. For example, when an executioner raises a sword to kill a thief, fear arises again and again. Then he thinks, "Will I escape from the hands of this thief?" In this way, he realizes that he has no control over his body. Likewise, beings who have many sufferings such as birth, old age, sickness, and death think, "I am Ishvara or Brahma."

In order to destroy the conceptualizations of those practitioners, the Tathagata shows the passing away. For the time being, if the Tathagata is the god of gods, if the Tathagata completely passes into nirvana and disappears, then the world will appear to be declining. If it does not decline, then it is dependent on peace. If it is so dependent, then it should be known that there is a self, just like fire from smoke. If again non-self becomes self, then it should be known that the world is increasing. The self is true, but it is not self, and it will not be destroyed. If non-self is true, then self is not established. Light-increaser asked: Blessed One, what is meant by "is"? The Buddha replied: What is called "is" is the conduct of sentient beings, the twenty-five existences. What is called "is not" is the object without mind. If non-existence becomes a sentient being, then it will come from elsewhere. If consciousness is destroyed, then it will become diminished. If non-existence becomes a sentient being, then it will become increased. Therefore, these two do not arise or perish, therefore it is without decrease or increase. Asked: Blessed One, how should I know that there is a self? The Buddha replied: Light-increaser, well done, well done! Do not ask such a question. Light-increaser, for example, a goldsmith sees a gold mine and thinks: From what time has this gold become impure? I will temporarily search for the first boundary of the impurity of gold. Do you think he will find the first boundary? Blessed One, no. If from the first sign and mark, until the end of life, and even if he thinks endlessly, do you think he will find the boundary? The boundary will not be found, and the gold cannot be taken out. If the impurity is removed by skillful effort, then the gold can be taken out, but it cannot be done with great laziness and attachment. Light-increaser, in the same way, the accidental defilements of the self should be known to be the same. Again, some observe the self
