Me. (If) there is a Dharma of affliction, it will be destroyed. World Honored One, how is it that all sentient beings and all dharmas do not exist? It is like the assembly of a great drum. Again, (he) asked: Just as the light of an umbrella and the light of a jewel, from those two enter the world, if it is said to possess from people, then World Honored One, what is the maturation of this one Dharma? (The Buddha) replied: Light Holder, do you not know? (Light Holder) replied: World Honored One, I know. (The Buddha) replied: Speak of the appearance of the moon. (Light Holder) World Honored One, the moon is not a Dharma that arises from the maturation of sentient beings. (The Buddha) replied: If that is so, an example needs to be given. If jewels, the moon, the sun, and fire are not made by sentient beings, but are made by assembly, then are the sun and moon, which are prostrated to by the gods above, not sentient beings? World Honored One, the Buddha World Honored One is also called a sentient being until completely liberated from Nirvana, so are those also counted among the number of sentient beings? The World Honored One replied: That is not a sentient being. What is the reason for that? Because even a non-ordinary spiritual friend who possesses a village of sentient beings is not counted as the same as sentient beings. The Buddha is the cause of the Dharma that arises from maturation, the Buddha is completely liberated from Nirvana, and sentient beings are also the cause of the Dharma that arises from maturation. Light Holder, when all sentient beings are exhausted, if fire appears and destroys, or is about to appear, speak of that. (Light Holder) World Honored One, I do not know. (The Buddha) I said before that you do not know. (Light Holder) World Honored One, where do birth, old age, sickness, and death come from? Where do they go? (The Buddha) replied: Where does the sound of a great drum come from? Where does it go? (Light Holder) World Honored One, from the assembly. (The Buddha) replied: How is it? Just as all dharmas have not been done, there is no doer, and are separated from the doer, the sound of the great drum is also the same as that. (The Buddha) replied: That is not so, does the great drum have a doer? (Light Holder) World Honored One, no. (The Buddha) replied: Similarly, Nirvana

Those beings who have transcended karma and attained a true foundation, who creates them? There is no creator. Beings are masters of themselves by their own nature. How is it understood? If beings perform virtuous deeds, they are Buddhas; if they do not, they are beings. Who created the first beings? The Blessed One replied: Who created the formless gods, such as the gods of neither perception nor non-perception? And how do they live? Blessed One, they live by karma, but it is useless to seek their karma, as well as the ways of householders, merchants, and conduct. Who makes them truly abide? The questioner said: Karma does. From karma, many dharmas arise, and from virtuous karma, many dharmas also arise. So, what are the dharmas that arise from virtuous karma? And what are those that arise from non-virtuous karma? The Blessed One replied: From karma, existence (samsara) arises; from virtuous karma, liberation arises. The questioner said: Blessed One, how does the unborn state arise from virtuous karma? The Blessed One replied: It arises from the non-different Suchness. If the Buddha arises from virtuous karma, how is the unborn state attained? The Blessed One replied: Through well-practiced actions. Who taught this? The Blessed One replied: It was taught by the Buddhas of beginningless time. Who manifested and taught all of beginningless time? The Blessed One replied: The Shravakas and all the Pratyekabuddhas from beginningless time cannot know or conceive it. If in the world there were someone as learned as Shariputra, even if he constantly contemplated for an immeasurable length of time what the first arising of the Buddhas' Buddhahood was, he would not be able to know or conceive it, and in the meantime, he would only pass into Nirvana. The Blessed One also said: Even if great Maudgalyayana and others constantly went to the endless future with the power of miraculous abilities, they would not be able to understand the Buddhas' arising of Buddhahood and observe the Buddha-fields; the Bodhisattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, such as Maitreya, are also the same. All the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are also the same. The Blessed One also said
