Because there is no attention, this is called the recollection of the Buddha. For example, without characteristics, without nature, and without attention. Why is that? Because the Buddhas do not attend to the characteristics of form, not from discrimination, not from various discriminations, not from attachment, not from non-attachment, not from samadhi, not from wisdom, not from knowledge, not from non-knowledge. Why is that? Because the Tathagatas are without basis, inconceivable, and extremely inconceivable. Therefore, do not grasp at characteristics. Do not be attached in the slightest to any Dharma that should be abandoned, attained, or cultivated. Since even the Tathagata himself is not found, what need is there to mention recollection? Shariputra, a monk should instruct a monk thus: 'Monk, come here. You should properly attend to the self-nature of all Dharmas. Do not attend to the concept of Dharma.' Thus he instructs and subsequently teaches. When one attends in this way, one rejoices in complete non-attachment, non-greed, non-Dharma, non-thing, and single nature. If even the concept of Dharma does not arise, what need is there to mention the concept of a person? That is non-existent. Shariputra, what do you think? If Dharma is not found, will the concept of Dharma arise? He replied: Bhagavan, that is not so. If the concept of Dharma is not attended to and Dharma is not found, is there any Dharma that leads to destruction? He replied: Bhagavan, that is not so. The Buddha said: Shariputra, if there is no root of a tree, will branches, leaves, and bark arise? He replied: Bhagavan, that is not so. The Buddha said: Shariputra, likewise, if Dharma is not found, will the concept of Dharma arise? He replied: Bhagavan, that is not so. If the concept of Dharma is not attended to and Dharma is not found, is there any Dharma that leads to destruction? He replied: Bhagavan, that is not so.

Salakso. The Buddha said: If one does not cling to the Dharma or the concept of Dharma in this way, and does not pay attention to it, then there is no need to meditate on that which has no cessation and no arising, and one does not conceptualize. One does not make various distinctions, one does not make cessation, one does not make various cessations, one does not make entry, one does not make return, because one has obtained the very nature of suchness, and therefore one establishes terminology. Shariputra, teaching in this way and accordingly showing in this way is called a virtuous friend. Ultimately, there is neither virtue nor non-virtue. Shariputra, those who possess those characteristics are rare in the world. For example, having an undeluded and correct view is therefore called a correct view. However, Shariputra, correct view, correct patience, and correct aspiration are like this: following and observing correctly without delusion is what the Tathagata calls correct view. Shariputra, whoever does not have correct observation without delusion is not a correct view. Shariputra, speaking of self, speaking of sentient beings, speaking of life, speaking of person, speaking of permanence, speaking of annihilation, whatever is said, all of those are wrong views. Shariputra, the Tathagatas or the Shravakas of the Tathagatas do not speak of self, do not speak of sentient beings, do not speak of life, do not speak of person, do not speak of permanence, do not speak of annihilation, this is called the correct view of the Tathagatas and the Shravakas of the Tathagatas. Apart from correct observation, undeluded observation, and seeing as it is, they are all ordinary beings. Why is that? Shariputra, because ordinary beings do not have the slightest correct view. Furthermore, those who possess conforming patience, although they have a part of correct view, it is because they do not see things as they are. Shariputra, thus there is correct view and wrong view, and seeing correctly is correct view.

Giving with worldly defilements increases enjoyment. Shariputra, like this deception, wandering in samsara, whatever dharma is to be blamed, the Tathagata says is the practice of pure conduct. Shariputra, It is not said that the correct view is this, and the wrong view is that. Why is that? Shariputra, all things that become views are based on what is not correct. Shariputra, whoever thinks like this: the correct view is this, the wrong view is that, then he himself is a wrong view. Why is that? Shariputra, in this noble Dharma Vinaya, like the sky and the palm of the hand, all things that become views are completely abandoned, and all terms are completely cut off, such a state is the Dharma of a Shramana. The third chapter, the chapter on good spiritual friends. Shariputra, what is called the noble Sangha? Those who are without birth, without cessation, without arising, without signs, without characteristics, and without elaboration, enter into it, especially believe in it, truly declare it, truly rely on it, and possess such patience. Especially believing in no characteristics, even if I do not cling to myself, what need is there to cling to the stream-enterer? What need is there to cling to the once-returner? What need is there to cling to the non-returner? What need is there to cling to the Arhat? What need is there to cling to the Dharma? What need is there to cling to men, women, and hermaphrodites? What need is there to cling to names? What need is there to cling to places? Not clinging to "this is like this" and so on, this is the Sangha. Although this is so, Shariputra, few are those who believe in no characteristics, no cessation, and no arising. Shariputra, those who believe in no characteristics, no cessation, and no arising, they understand various things with non-inverted wisdom, completely understand various things, and thus universally discuss them, truly rely on them, Declaring various things, bound and infatuated by clinging to the truth.
