The Mahayana Sutra called "The Vinaya Pitaka of the Buddha, Subduing the Morally Corrupt." The Mahayana Sutra called "The Vinaya Pitaka of the Buddha, Subduing the Morally Corrupt." In Sanskrit: Buddha Pitaka Duḥ Śīla Nigrahi Nāma Mahāyāna Sūtra. In Tibetan: The Mahayana Sutra called "The Vinaya Pitaka of the Buddha, Subduing the Morally Corrupt." Volume 1. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Deer Park at Ṛṣipatana in the country of Vārāṇasī, together with a great community of monks, five hundred in number, who were free from defilements, had accomplished what needed to be done, had done what needed to be done, had laid down the burden, had attained their own benefit, had completely exhausted all bonds to existence, whose minds were completely liberated by correct knowledge, whose wisdom was completely liberated, and who were masters of themselves. All of them were Arhats, except for one person, namely the venerable Ānanda. Then, the venerable Śāradvatīputra, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, the venerable Mahākāśyapa, the venerable Subhūti, the venerable Bakkula, the venerable Maitreyīputra Pūrṇa, and the venerable Ānanda, having arisen from meditation at dawn, went to where the Blessed One was, bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. Then, the venerable Śāriputra said to the Blessed One: The Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha, the Blessed One, has thus spoken: all conditioned phenomena are not manifestly accumulated, are unborn, are without characteristics, are without nature, are not accumulated, and are not demonstrable. This is the rarity of the Blessed One, the rarity of the Sugata. The Blessed One said: Śāriputra, seeing what meaning do you say that the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha, the Blessed One, has thus spoken: all conditioned phenomena are not manifestly accumulated, are unborn, and are without

without characteristics, without essence, without fabrication, and well-spoken until there is no indication, the Bhagavan is truly wonderful! The Sugata is truly wonderful! Thus he spoke. He reported: "Bhagavan, when I entered solitude alone in this place, and when I was truly dwelling within, such a thought arose in my mind: 'How does the Bhagavan speak of names and characteristics for dharmas that have no name and no characteristic? How does he speak of speech for dharmas that are extremely unspeakable?' Bhagavan, when I thought deeply about this meaning, a sense of wonder arose in me. Bhagavan, having seen this meaning, I said this: 'The Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, the Bhagavan, like this, all conditioned phenomena have not been manifestly fabricated, there is no arising, no characteristic, no essence, no fabrication, and what is spoken until there is no indication, the Bhagavan is truly wonderful! The Sugata is truly wonderful!'" Thus he reported. The Buddha said: "Shariputra, it is just so. Shariputra, this place is wonderful. This place is supremely wonderful. That is, the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment of the Tathagatas, the Arhats, the perfectly enlightened Buddhas. Shariputra, for example, if a painter or a skilled student of a painter were to show various colors and various shapes of images in the sky, in the open space, without a place to rely on and without an object of focus, would that person be considered wonderful?" He reported: "Bhagavan, it is truly wonderful! The Sugata is supremely wonderful!" The Buddha said: "Shariputra, even more wonderful than that is that the Dharma taught by the Tathagata after he has manifestly awakened to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment is the most wonderful. Why is that? Shariputra, because there is no essence, no attention, no effort, no pervasion, no attainment, no entering, no abandoning of attainment,

Shariputra, for example, if someone here puts the king of mountains, Mount Sumeru, in his mouth, swallows it well three times, and digests what he swallows like food, without causing him any suffering, and after eating it, walks in the sky, Shariputra, what do you think? Is such a person very rare? Answer: World Honored One, it is rare! Sugata is extremely rare! The Buddha said: Shariputra, even more so, just like this, without manifestation, without arising, without signs, without characteristics, to the unteachable, the Dharma taught by the Tathagata is extremely rare. Shariputra, for example, a great fire of weight burning, intensely burning, completely intensely burning, the flames becoming one, with light, extending a krosha in width.
