holding onto sound. Shariputra, whatever holds onto various incorrect sounds, these are not observed in reality by the noble Shravakas. Although that is so, the various sounds and the many forms of holding onto various sounds are the characteristics of a single consciousness, like this: without characteristics. Disagreeing with the absence of characteristics is entering into inverted perceptions, but possessing the patience of non-inversion is called the noble Sangha. Those who are without characteristics, without signs, without attachment, without complete attachment, without grasping, without birth, and without cessation, are the patience of non-inversion. For that which enters naturally, there is no meditation, no differentiated meditation. There is no extreme weariness, no pride, no differentiated pride, no non-differentiated pride, no contradiction. For that, there is no near shore, no far shore, no conception, individually realizing the characteristic of non-conception, therefore it is called the noble Sangha. Shariputra, because the assembled are completely severed, therefore it is called the noble Sangha. Shariputra, like this, whatever Dharma I have seen, that is seeing me, it is said. Shariputra, I will never become Dharma. Shariputra, like this, I am seen in the form of a body by the foolish Devadatta and also by other heretics. Shariputra, like this, if the Tathagata is seen in form, then it is not seeing. It is not by sound either, and it should be applied in the same way. Shariputra, if someone sees the Tathagata in the form of a body and then says they have seen, that statement is merely the surface meaning of words, and if questioned, it is not truly understanding. Why is that? Shariputra, like this, whoever sees the Tathagata in form, that is not truly seeing. Shariputra, if someone does not become arrogant towards all Dharmas that are without characteristics, without signs, without the three mental activities, without effort, without cessation, without arising, and without elaboration, and does not become arrogant towards Nirvana either, towards Nirvana

One does not become complacent because of what has passed. One does not rejoice in nirvana. One does not conceptualize. One does not engage in various conceptualizations. To believe that all dharmas are of one nature is like this: it is precisely the absence of nature. Shariputra, the Tathagata is also like that, and seeing the Tathagata is also like that. What is seeing the Tathagata? It is without effort, without elaboration, and without arising. It is without conceptualization, without attachment, without grasping, without name, without sign, without non-sign, without the activity of signs, without taking to words, and without the activity of imputation. Therefore, not being complacent about the absence of things, where all speech is cut off, is the supreme seeing of the Tathagata. Shariputra, seeing what does one become seeing the Tathagata? What did the Tathagata say about seeing the Dharma? It is without sign, without aspiration, without elaboration, without taking, and always without focusing on all speech. That is, one does not become complacent with nirvana. Why is that? Shariputra, I also do not become complacent with nirvana, I do not become complacent because of nirvana, I do not rejoice in nirvana. Shariputra, would I say, "Be complacent with nirvana" or "Be complacent because of nirvana" or "Rejoice in nirvana"? Shariputra, whoever focuses on nirvana, I would not follow them into ordination. Following what kind of teacher into ordination? Shariputra, it should be known that the teaching of those teachers is protection. It should be known that they are slanderers in this discipline. It should be known that they are contentious in this discipline. Shariputra, it is like a great thief in villages, towns, and cities. Why is that? Shariputra, those foolish people are nirvana...

If a place can become an object of focus, what need is there to even mention a person? Shariputra, their teacher is not me, and they are not my disciples. As such, they do not belong to the assembly of my disciples, so I drive away those foolish people with gestures. Shariputra, if there are phenomena that are not caused, without intention, without characteristics, without patience, and without manifest complete enlightenment, they do not focus on nirvana either. What need is there to even mention their nirvana? Shariputra, this is that seeing which is seeing the Tathagata, the Tathagata has said to see the Dharma. Shariputra, what is the Tathagata? It is suchness, the unerroneous suchness, the non-different suchness. Shariputra, this is called the Tathagata. Furthermore, those who are without timidity and without doubt in the Dharma are called noble disciples. Those who abide in non-discrimination, free from discrimination, without elaboration, and without characteristics are noble beings, and they are called the noble Sangha. Shariputra, once upon a time, there was a childish person who had never seen a monkey before. Due to some need, he entered a dense forest. There, he saw a large group of monkeys gathered in one place. Seeing that large group of monkeys, he thought: I have heard that there are gods of the Thirty-Three, perhaps those gods of the Thirty-Three are these? So, with an eager and hasty demeanor, he quickly returned to his town. When he arrived, a large crowd of people had gathered in that town. He said to that large crowd of people: Have you ever seen the gods of the Thirty-Three before? They said: Friend, we have never seen the gods of the Thirty-Three before. He said: Wise ones, I have seen the gods of the Thirty-Three, you should also go and see the gods of the Thirty-Three.
