Apart from all these worldly people, no object whatsoever is visible. They abide in the true body, which is called the noble Sangha. They also focus on that term, and indicate the signless through names and signs. They fully demonstrate the very absence of elaboration. Shariputra, they are the Sangha Jewel, worthy objects of offering, and thus, they are called Sangha by the meaning of non-perversion. Shariputra, similarly, a monk who keeps in mind any place, and also knows that the very nature of that place is emptiness, and teaches it as such and accordingly reveals it, is called a virtuous friend. Shariputra, the complete cessation of all terms is called the noble Sangha. Why is that? Shariputra, because in this noble Dharma and Discipline, no term that has been truly designated is visible. Shariputra, therefore, the complete cessation of all terms is called the noble Sangha. Shariputra, if someone asks: Why is it called the term Sangha? If someone says: Because no term that has been truly designated is visible. Shariputra, to that I say, no object can be regarded as the Sangha, thinking as it is, and proclaiming the sign of non-attachment, because they are of one mind, one forbearance, and one taste. Although that single term is also spoken of only by worldly terms, in ultimate truth, there is no Sangha whatsoever. Whatever is permanent, stable, enduring, or of an unchanging nature, these four are not visible. For example, the term called Dharma, whatever term is truly designated, is condemned by the noble ones. This is a male. This is a female. This is a hermaphrodite. This is a god. This is a Naga. This is a Yaksha. This is a Gandharva. This is a Kumbhanda. This is Dharma. This is non-Dharma. Such a Dharma, having abandoned it today, focusing on many different bases, this word...

Saying, 'Bhikkhu, come here! Sit down! Lie down here!' Thus speaking, they falsely establish names and signs. What is the reason for that? Shariputra, all dharmas are without names and signs, without characteristics, without mental activity. Shariputra, what do you think? Can that which has no mental activity be expressed through language? He replied, 'Bhagavan, it cannot.' The Buddha said, 'Shariputra, if someone says, 'This is a woman, this is a man, this is a hermaphrodite, this is a deva, this is a naga, this is a yaksha, this is a pot, this is dharma, this is non-dharma,' then he is certainly speaking false words and has entered into a false extreme. Therefore, it should not be called a sangha. Shariputra, because he has entered into the non-inverted state, therefore it is called the noble sangha. Shariputra, know that for the time being, non-virtue is directed towards such an object, just like names and signs, which are the root of all non-virtue. Shariputra, in the noble Dharma-Vinaya, names and signs have been cut off. If one does not become arrogant due to names, then that sangha is like this. This is the noble sangha, this is the conventional sangha, this is the sangha of fruition, this is the suddenly appearing sangha, this is the naturally existing sangha, this is the sangha of monks, this is the sangha of nuns. How can it be said to be a harmonious sangha or a non-harmonious sangha? Everything has been abandoned, everything has been cut off, therefore it is called the noble sangha. Without names and signs, without language, without entry, the cessation of language, these are to explain the most excellent, therefore these things are invisible. Shariputra, if one completely clings to the language of names and signs, then one will cling to various kinds of views, those which become the cause of the arising of existence, that is, the aggregate of perception and the five aggregates.'

Because complete reliance is a place of wrong view. Having completely grasped untrue perceptions, such as wrongly grasping the perception of aggregates, grasping onto bad destinies, grasping onto objects, grasping onto wrong paths, and grasping onto what is untrue, these are not present in noble hearers. Except for all those who do not know the three realms, grasping onto what is untrue. Therefore, it is called the noble Sangha. Shariputra, whatever attachment there is to various untrue sounds, these are not the objects of the noble Sangha. For example, grasping as self, grasping as sentient beings, grasping as life, grasping as a person, grasping as a human, grasping as a non-human, grasping as a woman, grasping as a man, grasping as a god, grasping as hell, grasping as an animal birth, grasping as the realm of Yama, grasping as aggregates, grasping as elements, grasping as sources, grasping as arising, grasping as ceasing. Grasping as the sound of a conch shell, grasping as the sound of a large drum, grasping as the sound of a cymbal, grasping as the sound of an earthenware drum, grasping as the sound of a lute, grasping as the sound of a song, likewise, grasping as all the sounds of musical instruments, and earth, water, fire, wind, grasping as the sound of discipline, grasping as the sound of immoral discipline, grasping as the sound of the path, grasping as the sound of the wrong path, grasping as the sound of pride, grasping as the sound of all afflictions, grasping as the sound of purification, grasping as the sound of meditation, grasping as the sound of samadhi, grasping as the sound of absorption, grasping as the sound of the eighth, grasping as the sound of stream-entry, grasping as the sound of once-returner, grasping as the sound of non-returner, grasping as the sound of Arhat, grasping as the sound of knowledge, grasping as the sound of liberation, grasping as the sound of attaining fruition, grasping as the sound of Buddha, grasping as the sound of Dharma, grasping as the sound of Sangha, grasping as the sound of Nirvana, grasping as complete Nirvana.
