Those who praise contentment should think like this: they do not engage in any unwholesome livelihood for the sake of clothing. They do not engage in unwholesome livelihood for the sake of alms, lodging, medicine for illness, and necessary utensils. Shariputra, if a monk takes rags from the dustbin, he should think like this: "This rag from the dustbin of mine is for dispelling cold in cold weather, for dispelling heat in hot weather, for avoiding mosquitoes, horseflies, poisonous snakes, wind, and the touch of heat, for living in a humble dwelling, for eliminating evil fatigue, for being praised by the noble ones, for concealing shameful places, and for cultivating the noble path. Having worn these rags from the dustbin, I will strive not to wear the rags of ordinary people, even for one night. He should wash and rinse that rag well. If he develops attachment and clinging to that rag, he should abandon that rag. Shariputra, I do not even allow that rag for such a monk, let alone other utensils. Why is that? Because it is not the Dharma of a renunciant. Shariputra, like this, that state of his is not the Dharma of a renunciant. Like this, if it is not the Dharma of a renunciant, it is not suitable for him, let alone other utensils. Shariputra, at that time, it is better to cover the body with burning iron plates than for monks to enjoy rags from the dustbin in that way. Shariputra, if he develops craving and attachment to something, he should also wear rags from the dustbin like this: "This Dharma garment of mine is for protecting against cold," and so on, up to "for cultivating the noble path." Having worn this Dharma garment

One should attain the fruit of stream-entry. One should also attain the fruit of once-returning, the fruit of non-returning, and the state of being an Arhat. Furthermore, relying on this Dharma garment, one should think, 'Until I have fully accomplished the Dharma of a renunciate, I will not seek a second Dharma garment.' Thus, Shariputra, for a monk who possesses excellent and abundant intention, I allow the Dharma garment from discarded rags. Shariputra, when that monk enters a town for alms, he should generate mindfulness of the impermanence of all phenomena. Without distraction, he should don the armor of meditative concentration and enter the town for alms. Having practiced alms-gathering in the town, he should emerge from the town with a non-attached mind. Having placed the alms-food before him in a cross-legged posture, he should generate perceptions of impurity, unwholesomeness, feces and urine, chaff, vomit, non-cleanliness, sores, repulsiveness, disagreeableness, the likeness of a son's flesh, abandonment, decay, interconnectedness of flesh and bone, unpleasant odor, heaviness, and desirelessness. Possessing such perceptions of mindfulness, one should consume the food. Without attachment, without clinging, without hatred, without delusion, without existence, without excessive clinging, viewing it as a fault, and with the arising of wisdom, one should maintain the body only for as long as necessary, for the sake of sustenance, for the sake of averting hunger, for the sake of upholding pure conduct, for the sake of averting old feelings, for the sake of not generating new feelings, for the sake of strength and happiness, for the sake of dwelling in peace without fault, and for the sake of sustaining life. 'I am nourished for the sake of this.' Therefore, I abide in diligence, and for the sake of not diminishing the strength and power of the body, having eaten this food, one should attain the fruit of stream-entry. The fruit of once-returning
