Self is emptiness, there is no person, and there is no characteristic. Those who have such patience are intelligent and liberated, and they are homeless renunciates. They are blameless and pure in their faith-given offerings. Their ordination is completely purified by the karma of complete ordination. Shariputra, the abode of sentient beings and the Tathagatas is this one, namely, the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. How is this one? It is truly free from attachment and abandoned. What is abandoned? It is desires and views. What are desires? They are the first. What are views? They are attention. Why is that? Shariputra, all dharmas arise from attention, and whatever is attention is perception. Whatever is perception is view. Whatever is view is wrong view. Shariputra, the Tathagata said that even virtuous dharma is wrong view. Why is that? Shariputra, in this way, for those who are free from attachment, dharma or non-dharma, virtue or non-virtue are abandoned. He is not attached to all views, all attachments, and all attentions, therefore it is said to be free from attachment. Shariputra, enlightenment is abandonment. What is abandoned? Those belonging to desire. What are those belonging to desire? The improper and unwholesome attention of those belonging to desire, me? Mine? What is made by me and what is made by mine, all those are those belonging to desire. Thus, those who have abandoned the perception of self are without manifest attachment. That is abandonment, this is the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment of the Tathagatas. The seventh chapter, the chapter on previous efforts. Shariputra, I remember the past, relying on this unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, when I became a Chakravartin king, the one called Buddha Shakyamuni,

If I were to attend to thirty million kotis of Shravaka assemblies with robes, alms, dwellings, medicine for sickness, and necessary items, and having made them content with respect, reverence, service, and offerings, were to accomplish this unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, then those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, would not have prophesied to me that in the future I would become a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha. Why is that? It is because I have become one with the notion of marks and am manifestly attached to speaking of self. Shariputra, I also remember the past, when I became a Chakravartin king, there appeared eight thousand Buddhas named Dipankara, and to those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, together with their Shravaka assemblies, I also attended with robes, alms, dwellings, medicine for sickness, and necessary items, and having made them content with respect, reverence, service, and offerings, I accomplished this very unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, but those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, did not prophesy to me that in the future I would become a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha. Why is that? It is because I have become one with the notion of marks and am manifestly attached to speaking of self. Shariputra, I also remember that, starting from this very unsurpassed enlightenment, there appeared six thousand Buddhas named Prabhakara, and when I became a Chakravartin king, from that point until respect and offerings, all of that should be stated as before. Shariputra, I also remember that there appeared thirty million kotis of Buddhas named Tara Raja, and when I became a Chakravartin king, from that point until respect and offerings, it should be stated as before. Shariputra, I also remember that sixteen thousand Buddhas named Sala Raja appeared in one kalpa. Shariputra, the name of that kalpa was also called Uttara.
