All roots are completely severed. He has damaged all roots of virtue, therefore he will lose the power to perform any virtuous deeds. This is the path of degradation, causing beings to fall into the hellish cycle of existence, losing the way, blocking the way, radiance fading, color fading, unable to be imitated, the limbs of virtue damaged, lax, all footholds completely lost, entering into evil footholds, proclaiming faults, recognizing faults, like an outcast, behavior ruined, practicing peace meaninglessly, like a cemetery, all rituals lost, this is destroying the path in my teachings, abiding as a Dharma thief, destroying the hearth, a listener, a messenger of demons, a slanderer, and those who are bound should not listen. Shariputra, just as a fox in a lion's den, a eunuch among Chakravartins, a monkey in a gathering of gods, one without possessions among dragon kings, a blind man among those with divine eyes, a lotus creature among Garuda kings. Shariputra, if a monk with broken vows dwells among my Shravaka assembly, even hundreds of thousands of gods will each experience great displeasure. How much more so would a messenger of Mara perform Uposatha or Pravāraṇā? He is a messenger of Mara. After hearing this perfect enlightenment of the Buddha, when he proclaims it to householders, some unbelieving gods, nagas, and yakshas will laugh with great laughter. Like a rogue horse among thoroughbreds, a monk who hides and conceals sins, they will mock, saying: Why is this person sitting on this seat? Therefore, because he is not a noble being, he does not think that he knows nothing or sees nothing, he deceives gods, humans, and himself. Look! This is a thief of the world, including the gods. Even though the gods know that he possesses non-qualities, he still enjoys the things given out of faith. He openly speaks, performs prostrations, stands up, joins his palms, and bows. For both householders and renunciates, this is a degradation of lineage and deceit.

He acts like a corpse in a charnel ground. He wears robes without being given them. He uses a begging bowl without being given it. He consumes food without being given it. He uses an umbrella and shoes without being given them. He accepts alms without being given them. He uses a dwelling without being given it. He uses a cushion without being given it. He uses a servant without being given one. He uses a monastery without being given one. He uses a water vessel without being given one. He walks and sits without being given permission. He uses a needle and awl without being given them. Like this, whichever direction he takes a step, whether east, south, west, or north, he takes that step without being given permission. Even in his conduct, he is a thief. Always observing, he is also a thief. Even in looking, looking to the left and right, contracting and extending, Even when wearing the monastic robe, the begging bowl, and the Dharma robes, he is a thief. Whatever movements and actions of his body, speech, and mind, in all of these he is a thief. Whatever hair-cutting he has done is also the hair-cutting of a thief. Shariputra, all the movements, thoughts, actions, and uses of monks who have broken their vows are said to be thieves. Shariputra, even when a young, sinful monk washes his hands, defecates, and urinates, he is said to be a thief. Why is that? Shariputra, because this Jambudvipa is protected by kings, great ministers, and humans and non-humans, this foolish person is a thief of gods and humans. Shariputra, even in this way, kings or great ministers would not think that this thief is more important or more excellent than us who possess virtues. Shariputra, kings or great ministers regarding monks who have broken their vows

Because they do not perceive that there is merit in being adorned with the insignia of an upright ascetic, therefore, they are not permitted to take even one step on the ground. Shariputra, whatever is given by faith, even just spitting, is not permitted to those who are not holy beings. Shariputra, in this way, a sinful monk constantly engages in thieving behavior day and night, only engaging in the deceit of thieving. Shariputra, all those who are called thieves, or are known as thieves, or are called plunderers, these are euphemisms for sinful monks. Shariputra, in this way, a sinful monk is called a thief of the world together with the gods. Shariputra, is the thief of the world together with the gods able to completely purify any bowl of water given by faith? He replied: Blessed One, he is not able. The Buddha said: Shariputra, what should be said of his non-virtue? What should be said of a sinful monk? Shariputra, this monk with broken discipline is a thief of the world together with the gods, guilty of great faults. Shariputra, seeing this, the Tathagata said this: It is better to eat an iron ball burning like a flame than to eat the alms of the countryside of those undisciplined, discipline-breaking ones. Shariputra, a monk with broken discipline is a degenerate of lineage, is not to be emulated, his body is completely tormented, and his mind is completely tormented. He dreams of sin in his dreams, is not happy alone, sighs when he goes into solitude, is dejected in the presence of monks with discipline, is always dejected, is ashamed and embarrassed. Even when receiving offerings given by faith, he is possessed by a confused mind. He is attached to material things and attached to the craving for flavors. After the destruction of the body, he will fall into bad destinies, bad migrations, and be born in the hells of sentient beings. Shariputra, this
