At that time, immeasurable, limitless, inconceivable, and beyond comprehension, even far beyond the beyond, in a world called "Extremely Fragrant," the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, perfect in knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Lokavidu, unsurpassed guide of beings, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Immaculate Light Sun Essence, appeared in the world. Manjushri, the lifespan of that Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, Immaculate Light Sun Essence, was nine thousand kalpas. The beings in that world were inclined towards the inferior, and few were inclined towards the vast. After that Tathagata passed into complete nirvana, the sacred Dharma remained for a thousand years. His relics also increased in this way, just as my relics will increase. Manjushri, at that time there was a monk named Datta-prajna, abiding in the aggregate of morality, conscientious and desiring to learn, very learned. That monk was beautiful and pleasing to behold, with an excellent and radiant complexion. In the morning, he put on his lower garment, took his bowl and Dharma robes, and went to the great city of Victory for alms. He walked in that city for alms and went to the house of a merchant. In that merchant's house, there was a merchant's daughter, beautiful, lovely, and unmarried. Then, when that merchant's daughter saw the monk Datta-prajna, she developed a mind of desire and thought to herself: "If I do not obtain this monk Datta-prajna as my husband, I will die." She could not confide in anyone, and she was completely tormented by desire, and thus became ill. Then, the monk Datta-prajna, walking for alms, went to the monastery. The father of that girl also...

The time to die arrived. Then that girl's mother said to that girl, "Why have you become so ill like this?" She said nothing and did not eat. Then that girl's playmates, those who shared happiness and suffering equally, asked that girl, "Why have you become so ill like this?" She said, "I saw a certain monk, and I developed a desire of longing for him. If I meet that monk, I will recover from this illness. If I do not meet him, I will die." Then those girls, having heard from that girl, told her mother. Then her mother thought, "If she does not meet the monk Devapala, there is nothing to be done, this girl will die." Again she thought, "I must have this girl receive a prophecy from the monk Devapala. But will that monk Devapala always come to this house?" Then the monk Devapala also wandered in the city of Victory for alms, and also went to that merchant's house for alms. When he entered inside, he saw the merchant's daughter become weak. He said, "Why has this girl become weak and ill?" The girl's mother said, "This girl wants to listen to the Dharma, but I hindered her, and that is why she has become ill." Having said that, the monk Devapala said to the girl's mother, "Do not hinder this girl from listening to the Dharma." She said, "If the teacher gives this girl a prophecy, then I will not hinder this girl from listening to the Dharma." The monk Devapala said, "I will give this girl a prophecy." The girl's mother said, "Teacher, please come to this house always." Devapala said, "I will come." Then that girl, having heard the monk's words, became excited from improper attention, thinking, "I too must make every effort to make it so that I can fulfill my desires." For the sake of amusement, I request the teacher to come to this house. Then, the monk Dpa' Byin, without saying anything, agreed and, taking his alms bowl, went to the monastery. Then, the mother of that girl said these words to the girl: "Daughter, from now on, adorn yourself with ornaments, anoint your body with sandalwood, and wear clothes of various colors, and strive diligently to ensure that you can control him." She also diligently did so. Then, the monk Dpa' Byin came to that house again and again and became trusting. Because he saw her constantly, he developed a mind of attachment towards that girl, and abiding with that attachment in his mind, he became completely entangled by attachment. He lived and stayed very intimately with that girl, and being delighted and manifestly pleased with that intimacy, he stayed there again and again. Then, the family that had previously taken that girl in marriage heard that the monk Dpa' Byin was associating and staying with the girl. The monk Dpa' Byin was staying with that girl again and again, and they thought: "We must find a way to seize and kill this monk Dpa' Byin." The monk Dpa' Byin also heard that the girl's family was going to kill him, and he thought: "I must have this girl administer poison to kill that merchant's son." Then, the monk Dpa' Byin gave poison to the girl and said to her: "If I am truly dear to your heart, then kill this family with this poison." Then, the girl took the poison from the monk, mixed it with food, and entrusted it to a maidservant, saying: "Go and give this to my family." Then, that maidservant gave the food mixed with poison to the merchant's son. Then, the merchant's son ate the food mixed with poison and died. Then, the monk Dpa' Byin heard that the merchant's son had died. Having heard this, he felt great remorse and thought: "I have done a terrible deed!"
