Knowledge is an obstacle. Perceiving without characteristics is an obstacle. Perceiving without aspiration is an obstacle. Perceiving without manifestation is an obstacle. Perceiving without birth is an obstacle. Perceiving towards enlightenment is an obstacle. Manjushri, in short, all those who fixate on the aims of complete affliction or purification should be regarded as obstacles. Manjushri asked: World Honored One, how does generosity become an obstacle? How do ethics, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom become obstacles? The World Honored One said: Manjushri, all dharmas are without obstacles, but ignorant ordinary beings, through their own thoughts, make generosity an obstacle. Ethics, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom also become obstacles. Why is that? Manjushri, when ignorant ordinary beings give alms, they cause those stingy beings to lose faith. Because of their lack of faith, they generate anger and the fault of quarreling. The fault of anger and quarreling causes beings to fall into hell. Those who keep ethics, revile and despise those who break ethics, and utter unpraiseworthy words. Hearing those unpraiseworthy words, many ordinary beings lose faith, and because of their lack of faith, they fall into evil destinies. Those who practice patience, proudly say: "We are patient, but these others are filled with malice." Those who are intoxicated by the pride of patience generate suffering that arises from the basis of carelessness. Those who exert diligence boast about themselves, saying: "These monks are lazy and live without diligence, enjoying the offerings given by faith." They think that these monks are not even worthy of drinking water from the well. Thus, those who exert diligence praise themselves and denigrate others. I say that those people are foolish. Those who enter into meditative absorption develop attachment to the joy of meditation, and they...

They think, "We abide in equanimity, while these other monks abide in distraction, abiding in delight in bustle. How could these who delight in bustle become Buddhas? These are far from the enlightenment of the Buddhas." By that attention, they will fully endure cyclic existence for as many eons as the mind of contempt they generate. Later, when they engage in enlightenment, even if they have heard much, they will consider all phenomena to be without letters but with consciousness. Those who aim at wisdom and disparage others, I say, are ignorant. I say, they speak while ignorant. I say, they are not noble beings. I say, they are ruined by conceptualization. Even if they enter the Great Vehicle, they will think, "We are the lords of the world. We are the excellent ones in the world. We are the supreme ones in the world." If they see those of the Hearer Vehicle, they will generate no faith in them and will revile, mock, and utter unpraiseworthy words. By that evil thought and wrong speech, they will obtain going to bad migrations. Then, Mañjuśrī, become youthful, asked the Blessed One this: Blessed One, should not Bodhisattvas speak praise of the qualities of the Buddhas? The Blessed One said: Mañjuśrī, what do you think? Should not Bodhisattvas look upon all sentient beings with joy and generate the nature of beneficial things? Mañjuśrī replied: Blessed One, it is so. The Blessed One said: Mañjuśrī, what do you think? Has a Bodhisattva completely abandoned even some sentient beings of the Hearer Vehicle, the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, or the Great Vehicle? Mañjuśrī replied: Blessed One, it is not so. Because Bodhisattvas have equanimity towards all sentient beings, Bodhisattvas have not abandoned any sentient beings.

The Blessed One said: "Manjushri, for example, a doctor does not completely abandon any king, merchant, householder, poor person, or any sentient being. That doctor abides in equanimity, thinking, 'How can these sentient beings be free from illness?' Manjushri, similarly, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva has compassion for all sentient beings and abides in equanimity, thinking, 'How can all these sentient beings be liberated from the Buddha's teachings?' Manjushri, for example, if a doctor's lineage of medicine is not interrupted, he will be happy, satisfied, and delighted. Manjushri, similarly, if the lineage of the Buddha is not interrupted, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva will be happy, satisfied, and delighted. Manjushri, not all sentient beings are like doctors. Manjushri, a doctor who heals is rare. Manjushri, similarly, not all sentient beings are like Buddhas, the mind of enlightenment is rare. Wearing armor for the sake of enlightenment is unbearable for all sentient beings. For example, lazy people do not particularly focus on the duties of a doctor, thinking, 'I will be a doctor.' Similarly, all sentient beings cannot generate the mind of enlightenment, because laziness makes themselves sick. Manjushri, self-arising is rare. Wisdom that does not depend on others is rare. A broad mind is rare. Particularly focusing on the Buddha's teachings is rare." Then, Manjushri, who had become a youth, asked the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how can a Bodhisattva become completely pure without any obscurations on all dharmas?" After he asked this, the Blessed One said to Manjushri, who had become a youth: "Manjushri, a Bodhisattva who sees all dharmas as the nature of desire will attain the purification of karmic obscurations. One who sees all dharmas as the nature of hatred will attain the purification of karmic obscurations. All dharmas
