Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Samantabhadra looked to the left and right of King Ajatashatru's capital. As soon as he looked, a place for the retinue appeared in King Ajatashatru's capital. Many silk banners were hung, flags were erected, umbrellas, banners, and streamers were raised, and it was filled with scattered flowers as level as the palm of a hand, wide and vast. At that time, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva named 'Superior to Dharma' also gathered in that Bodhisattva's retinue. Then, Manjushri, having become a youth, called the Bodhisattva Superior to Dharma and said, 'Son of good family, please spread out the seats.' Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Superior to Dharma made a snapping sound at that time. Then, at that time, from that place of the retinue, forty-two thousand various kinds of beautiful seats covered with many clothes appeared. Then, Manjushri, having become a youth, sat on that spread seat, and those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas and those great Shravakas also sat on those seats accordingly. Then, King Ajatashatru, knowing that Manjushri, having become a youth, was sitting on the seat, said, 'Manjushri, please rest a little until the meal is finished.' Manjushri said, 'Great King, everything will be ready, please do little work.' Then, the four great kings, with their armies and retinues, diligently engaged in the work of offering to Manjushri, who had become a youth. Indra, the lord of the gods, also with his wives, goddesses, other gods, and daughters of gods, scattered agarwood and sandalwood powder on all the Bodhisattvas and all the Shravakas, but those noble beings did not generate the perception of incense or the perception of goddesses. Brahma, the lord of the Sahā world, also transformed into the form of a boy, holding a yak-tail whisk, stood fanning on the right side of Manjushri, who had become a youth. The sons of the gods of the Brahma realm also

I dwell on the right side of all Bodhisattvas, holding and waving a yak-tail whisk. The Dragon King Anavatapta also made my body invisible, and from the upper sky, he hung garlands of flowers. Moreover, from those garlands of flowers, water with eight qualities arose, and that water also performed the function of water. Likewise, in front of each and every Bodhisattva, and likewise in front of the assembly of Hearers, he hung jeweled garlands, and they also performed the function of water. Then, King Ajatashatru thought to himself: 'Since these Bodhisattvas do not have alms bowls, what will they eat?' Then, Manjushri, with the mind of a youth, knowing the thoughts of King Ajatashatru, said to King Ajatashatru: 'Great King, these sons of good family do not come carrying alms bowls. In whatever Buddha-fields they eat, as soon as they are seated, by the power of their past blessings, before the meal, from my own Buddha-field, the alms bowls come from the sky and are in their hands.' The king asked: 'Manjushri, from which Buddha-field do these noble beings come? What is the name of that Tathagata?' Manjushri said: 'Great King, the world is called 'Always Making Sound.' There, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, named 'Sound Virtue,' now resides. He lives. He dwells. And he also teaches the Dharma. From that Buddha-field, these Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas have come here to beg for your meal and to listen to your evil regrets.' Then, as soon as those Bodhisattvas generated the mind [of enlightenment], from the world 'Always Making Sound,' those alms bowls, by the blessing of those Bodhisattvas and by the former aspiration of that Tathagata, descended from the upper sky and fell into the great Anavatapta Lake, and having been washed with water possessing eight qualities, upon the lotus petals...

placed on top. Eighty-two thousand dragon daughters carried them and offered them to those Bodhisattvas. Then King Ajatashatru was extremely happy, joyful, and delighted, and having generated joy and happiness, he prostrated to Manjushri, who had become a youth, and sat down. Manjushri said: Great King, please bring forth the feast! Know that the time has come. Then King Ajatashatru brought forth all the arranged feasts. Whatever was prepared, whether it was for eating, drinking, or licking, it was inexhaustible until the end of the youth. Thus, from the feast prepared by King Ajatashatru for five hundred people, those eighty-two thousand Bodhisattvas and about five hundred Shravakas were satisfied, but the feast was not completely exhausted. Then King Ajatashatru said: Manjushri, this unprecedented feast is wonderful! Manjushri said: Great King, just as your evil remorse does not end, so too this feast will not end. Then those Bodhisattvas, great beings, having eaten the food, threw their bowls into the sky, and those bowls remained in the sky without being caught, and did not fall. Then the King said: Manjushri, where do these bowls reside? Manjushri said: Great King, where does your evil remorse reside, these bowls reside there. The King said: Manjushri, these bowls do not reside. Manjushri said: Great King, your evil remorse also does not reside. Great King, just as these bowls do not reside but do not fall, so too, King, all dharmas are unattached, do not abide, and do not fall upon any dharma. Then King Ajatashatru, knowing that those Bodhisattvas and great Shravakas had washed their hands and bowls, sat before Manjushri, who had become a youth, in order to listen to the Dharma, and said: Noble Manjushri, please dispel my remorse. Manjushri said: Great King, your remorse is that of the perfectly enlightened Buddha of the Ganges.
