At that time, he became that intermediate child. Shariputra, do not think that the one who became the child on the right at that time was someone else. Why is that? Shariputra, you yourself became that child at that time. The monk Maudgalyayana became the child on the left. Shariputra, look, because of the same roots of virtue, you two did not generate the mind of enlightenment because you were afraid of samsara, and because you were discouraged, you always thought that we must quickly enter nirvana, but you two could not surpass me. Shariputra, look, I realized all-knowingness, and you two were liberated by my teaching of the Dharma. Shariputra, it should also be understood in this way that if you want to quickly enter nirvana, you should generate the mind of all-knowingness. Why is that? Shariputra, the so-called quick vehicle is the excellent word of all-knowingness. The so-called non-deceptive vehicle, the so-called vehicle that benefits and brings happiness to all sentient beings, the so-called blazing vehicle, the so-called supreme vehicle, the so-called main vehicle, the so-called most excellent vehicle, the so-called unsurpassed vehicle, the so-called non-attached vehicle, the so-called vehicle that overcomes all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, Shariputra, is the excellent word of all-knowingness. When this story of the past and the teaching of all-knowingness were taught, countless beings generated the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Shariputra and, the great son of Maudgalyayana and, the great Kashyapa and, Revata and, Aniruddha and, Upali and, the son of the loving mother Jiangbo and all the great Shravakas prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One and said in one voice: Blessed One, sons and daughters of good families respectfully, will cultivate roots of virtue. They will also have faith in the vast Dharma. They will also make vast aspirations. Why is that? Blessed One, even if hundreds of thousands of Buddhas tell us the teachings of all-knowingness and teach us the Dharma, Blessed One, we

then there is no opportunity to realize the wisdom of non-attachment. World Honored One, we would rather be endowed with the five inexpiable sins than turn away from the unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Why is that? World Honored One, we would rather be endowed with the five inexpiable sins and endure suffering in the hells for sentient beings, than be separated from this unattached omniscient wisdom. World Honored One, if our minds are cut off, our faculties are weakened, and we are not vessels for omniscient wisdom, what shall we do? World Honored One, it is like a person who has died and passed away, their relatives will no longer be close to them. World Honored One, if we are inclined towards the Hearer Vehicle, we will not be able to benefit the gods and the world. World Honored One, it is like this great earth that can benefit two-legged and four-legged beings. World Honored One, those who have generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment are those who can benefit the world including the gods. Chapter Three After speaking these words, King Ajatasatru, together with his fourfold army, went to where the World Honored One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head to the feet of the World Honored One, circumambulated him three times, and then sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, King Ajatasatru folded his palms and bowed to the World Honored One, and asked the World Honored One, "World Honored One, upon what do sentient beings dwell? By what means do they manifestly engage in and commit sinful actions?" Having asked this, the World Honored One spoke to King Ajatasatru, "Great King, sentient beings dwell upon self, sentient being, life, and person. Great King, sentient beings rely on the view of the aggregates as self, and dwell in perverted manifestations, and thus manifestly engage in and commit sinful actions." Asked: "World Honored One, what is the root of the view of the aggregates as self?" Replied: "Great King, the root of the view of the aggregates as self is ignorance."

arises from the root. Question: Blessed One, what is the root of ignorance? Answer: Great King, ignorance arises from improper attention. Question: Blessed One, what is the root of improper attention? Answer: Great King, improper attention arises from the root of superimposing on what does not exist. Question: Blessed One, what is meant by superimposing on what does not exist? Answer: Great King, superimposing on what does not exist is a conventional term for conceptualizing what has not arisen. Question: Blessed One, what is the root of conceptualizing what has not arisen? Answer: Great King, conceptualizing what has not arisen is a conventional term for what has not arisen in combination. Question: Blessed One, what is meant by what has not arisen in combination? Answer: Great King, what has not arisen in combination means that because it has not been born and has not arisen, it is therefore called not arisen in combination. Question: Blessed One, what is it that does not arise, please tell us briefly. Answer: There is not even a little to be said about what does not arise. Question: Blessed One, what is regret focused on? Answer: Great King, regret is focused on doubt. Question: Blessed One, what is meant by doubt? Answer: Great King, doubt means doubting what is said by those noble ones who speak truthfully, that is called doubt. Question: Blessed One, who is a noble one? Who is a truthful speaker? The Blessed One answered: Great King, because of being free from dust and all views, it is called a noble one. Great King, those who realize that all phenomena do not arise in combination are called truthful speakers. After saying this, King Ajatasatru (492-460 BC) said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, the world is obscured by the afflictions of my stream of thought, and therefore I do not believe what is said by those noble ones who speak truthfully, and thus I strive to do various sinful deeds, this is truly a rare thing that you speak of, Blessed One! This is truly a wonderful thing done by the Sugata! Blessed One
