Just as (killing) parents is, so is killing in the world, it is destroying one's own essence. Manjushri asked: World Honored One, why do you regard it as the same as Rahula, but for those who hold their own essence, the flawed and peculiar aspects, you show that they are cut off and killed by annihilation? The World Honored One said: Son of good family, do not say that. The Tathagata regards it as the same as Rahula. For example, Manjushri, if a Dharma-seeking person eats two meals a day, someone points out that if he only eats one meal, he will kill eighty kinds of insects. If that is the case, then for them, killing will not be considered pure. Furthermore, Manjushri, if one desires great happiness, and from that happiness radiates outwards, destroying the desire to become a noble one, that is killing oneself. If the noble ones do that, it will become the sin of killing oneself. If you generate a desire mind and dwell in the place of others, do not say, "If a mind desiring oneself arises, what should I do?" That will generate shame. Whether I have one body or not, dwelling like a hero, is killing oneself destroying one's own realm? No, it is not. World Honored One, that is a collection of merit. Similarly, Manjushri, the noble ones also kill themselves in this way. Why is that? Because of the poison of afflictions, so it will not become killing others. The words of the Buddha's Dharma, for the flawed and peculiar aspects, those who destroy the supreme Dharma, just as my afflictions are inexhaustible, make them disappear, and also make them commit unrighteous harm, those are offerings to me. Just as wanting oneself to be in pain, happiness, food, and abandoning life, wanting to abandon oneself, cutting off the flawed and peculiar aspects with annihilation, that is the wisdom of the Tathagatagarbha. Manjushri asked: Is it not the case that for the sake of the Tathagatagarbha, the Buddhas do not eat meat? The World Honored One said: Manjushri, it is indeed so. In those lifetimes revolving in the cycle of beginningless and endless samsara, there is no being who has not been a mother or a sister.

Becoming a dog also passes away; the world of life is like a dancer. Therefore, my flesh and the flesh of others are the same, so the Buddhas do not eat meat. Furthermore, Manjushri, the realm of all sentient beings is the realm of Dharma. Because eating meat that has become the same realm, the Buddhas do not eat meat. Manjushri asked: Honey, conch shells, shoes, and silk worms, etc., are they not the flesh of their own realm? The Blessed One replied: Manjushri, do not say that. The Buddha has abandoned the bodies of all worldly beings. The Buddha is without defilement. If one relies on any object of attachment, that is not appropriate. Approaching defilement is the nature of skillful means. This relies on coming from one substance to another. Do not rely on the substance from which it originates. What comes from one to another, not by means of killing, is acceptable to rely on. Manjushri asked: In a marketplace, a shoemaker sews shoes from leather and offers them to the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha. Does he accept what comes from one to another? Manjushri asked: If a buffalo dies naturally, and the owner of the buffalo takes the leather from a Chandalas, seeks a shoemaker to sew shoes, and then gives them to someone who observes the precepts, is that coming from one to another? The Blessed One replied: If a buffalo dies naturally, and the owner of the buffalo has a shoemaker sew shoes and gives them to someone who observes the precepts, should it be accepted? Or if it is not accepted, does it accord with the monks? This is without compassion, but it does not violate the precepts. Manjushri asked: Is it not permissible to plow and dig? Should food cooked with unclean water not be accepted? If that is the case, do the monks have such a situation? The Blessed One replied: That is called worldly perception. If there is a patron, mix food and drink with clean water. Where there is a patron, one should not plow and dig. Where there is no patron, what can the Buddha do? There are living beings on the land, there are living beings in the water, and there are living beings in the sky.
