The teaching called "Karma-Mind" also refers to the meaning of "Tathagatagarbha." What is meant by "Mind, by nature pure"? That is the Tathagatagarbha. It is the chief of all dharmas, and all dharmas are the nature of the Tathagatagarbha. Furthermore, what is meant by "Mind, acting with great faith" is that after cutting off all defilements and revealing the essence of self, that which is greatly delighted is the Tathagatagarbha itself. Then, what is meant by "later speech and action" is that whatever is spoken and done after attaining Buddhahood is all for the sake of liberating the world. At that time, just as a person sees a shadow, so too is the Tathagatagarbha seen. Therefore, it is said to follow like a shadow. The meaning of that verse is as follows: Mind precedes all dharmas, mind is the chief, mind is the nature. With mind greatly disturbed, what is spoken and done will be accompanied by suffering, like a well-driven chariot. The meaning of that verse refers to afflictions. What is meant by "Mind is also greatly disturbed" is that it is disturbed by being covered by afflictions. Whatever the mind becomes means that the Tathagatagarbha has entered into afflictions. Then, all speaking and acting go for the sake of suffering. What is meant by "a well-driven chariot" is that just as the wheel follows the ox, the accumulation of sins causes the wheel of samsara to make beings wander greatly in hell and the animal realm. Therefore, it is established that even if one is negligent in merit, one will not delight in sin. Furthermore, Manjushri, just as people churn milk because they know there is butter in milk, why do people not churn water? Because there is no substance. Similarly, Manjushri, because there is the Tathagatagarbha, people keep the precepts and practice pure conduct. Furthermore, Manjushri, a person who desires gold and has discernment will dig in rocks, why not dig in trees? Because stone has the essence of gold, so they dig; trees have no gold, so they do not dig. Similarly, Manjushri, discerning people will focus on things that have essence.

I thought I would become a Buddha, guarding the precepts and practicing brahmacharya. Furthermore, Manjushri, if there is no essence, then brahmacharya will become meaningless. Just as churning water for millions of years will not produce butter, if I have no essence, then my attachment to myself and the practice of brahmacharya and precepts will become meaningless. Manjushri asked: What is the meaning of brahmacharya, brahmacharya? Why did the Thus-gone One abandon the enjoyment of desirable qualities? Angulimala also asked: Gods and many people must know that this is the law of falling, so they abandoned the attachment to desires. The Blessed One taught: Angulimala, do not say that. Because all sentient beings have the Tathagata-garbha, all sentient beings are Dharma brothers. All women are sisters. Angulimala asked: King Suddhodana and the goddess Maya are also siblings, so how did they become parents? The Blessed One taught: That was to show the illusory behavior for the sake of saving other worlds. For example, two warriors of the king set up empty targets, agreeing to hit each other, taking the empty targets in a way that does not hurt people, making the king and all the retinue happy, but sentient beings do not understand the difference. Similarly, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, show parents and themselves as steadfast husbands by means of skillful means, and then save many sentient beings from the endless sea of suffering of samsara, but sentient beings do not understand the difference. For example, in a music gathering, a dancer performs dances, and in the intervals of dance and speech, he will become a man, a woman, and a hermaphrodite, quickly satisfying many sentient beings. Similarly, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, also show their bodies like a great dancer, saving countless sentient beings, but sentient beings do not understand that this is the skillful means of a man. For example, in the center of a music gathering, a magician cuts himself into many forms and makes many sentient beings happy by playing, but he is not hurt or touched.

Moreover, just as a magician, in order to benefit many sentient beings, manifests an illusory body himself. Furthermore, Manjushri, the Tathagata is endowed with all the wisdom of omniscience. When he perfectly observes all the worlds, from beginningless time, wandering and transmigrating in samsara, there is no one who has not been a mother, no one who has not been a sister. Mothers have also been wives, servants have also been fathers, and fathers have also been servants. Thus, the world, living for countless eons, is like a dancer. The Tathagata practices pure conduct. The seventh chapter is completed. Furthermore, Manjushri, having engaged in great sensual play together with one's own essence, having taken a small amount of pleasure oneself, one transforms as one speaks. If one is born as a eunuch, then that pleasure and the heap of suffering arise. Women also have the essence of the Tathagata, and so do men. Having taken hold of oneself, can one transform as one speaks, as one pleases? Therefore, the essence of all sentient beings is one essence. Having begun to practice pure conduct, the Tathagata went to the place where one does not change what one has established. Manjushri asked: For what reason does the Tathagata not fully establish all lay fathers and lay mothers in pure conduct? For what reason are laymen, laywomen, monks, and nuns likened to a four-pillared house as the cause of the holy Dharma, while great sins also easily arise? For what reason do laymen and laywomen so easily give rise to evil? And also, why the disciplinary code of laymen and laywomen... The Blessed One said: Manjushri, that is another concept, named as the concept of the world. Although the Tathagata places all sentient beings in the state of Buddhahood, he does not hold them in the manner of Rahu's grasp. The concept of Buddha and the concept of the world are also different; this question is not to be asked. Manjushri, because it is the essence of all sentient beings, abandoning killing is Buddhahood. Son of lineage, how do I kill?
