Going there, that person who performs extremely difficult deeds is none other than, I think, the Tathagata himself. The Blessed One said: Good son, good, good! I also said the same words. That person who performs extremely difficult deeds, even if all Buddhas were to speak of his qualities for countless eons, they would not find the end of it. Furthermore, good son, just as all rivers flow into the great ocean's mass of water without being seen, similarly, in that person's mind, the minds of all the worlds enter into it without being seen. Furthermore, good son, just as the great ocean casts all the corpses of sentient beings to the end, similarly, that noble person does not even glance sideways, nor is he attached to his household, nor does he mix with those who do not possess the Dharma, and he also abandons those who slander the Tathagatagarbha. Such a noble person is one who performs extremely difficult deeds. Those who support and listen to him are also among my Shravakas who perform extremely difficult deeds. Asked: Blessed One, with what characteristics does a newly generated Bodhicitta Bodhisattva Mahasattva possess? The Blessed One said: Good son, possessing eight characteristics, one is a newly generated Bodhicitta Bodhisattva Mahasattva. What are the eight? Having faith in the Dharma, thinking and analyzing, accepting and holding, being very filial to parents, repaying the kindness of one's own teacher, not conforming to all views, being skilled in surpassing all characteristics and subduing, abandoning all that is not proper, and a mind without desire, such that even in dreams there is no seminal emission and respecting the precepts, possessing these characteristics, one is a newly generated Bodhisattva. Again, possessing eight characteristics, one is a newly generated Bodhisattva, what are the eight? Teaching the Mahayana, clearly teaching the Tathagatagarbha and possessing generosity, not being greedy for wealth, possessing loving-kindness, possessing compassion, possessing joy, possessing equanimity, viewing all sentient beings as one's only child, relying on virtuous friends, and completely avoiding evil friends.

Who abandons, and is content with gain and respect, if possessing these eight characteristics, is a new Bodhisattva. Again, if possessing eight characteristics, is a new Bodhisattva, what are the eight? Being happy to speak beneficial, appropriate, and gentle words, having few afflictions, possessing patience, being able to listen to all the Sutra Pitaka, overcoming eye sleep, not being lazy, rising and being mindful, and having faith in discipline, if possessing these eight characteristics, is a new Bodhisattva. Again, if possessing eight characteristics, is a new Bodhisattva, what are the eight? Truth and purity, practicing pure conduct, being wise, possessing light and having a good appearance, abandoning association with women, looking from afar from the homes of relatives, fearing all sinful practitioners because of that hatred, having one's body hair stand on end as soon as one hears, and loving and being compassionate to all beings, if possessing these eight characteristics, is a new Bodhisattva. Again, if possessing eight characteristics, is a new Bodhisattva, what are the eight? Knowing the difference between what is said by Mara and what is spoken by the Buddha, respecting the knowledge of the Sutra Pitaka, knowing the difference between discipline and non-discipline and not concealing it, being skilled in what the Tathagata thought and spoke, understanding what the Tathagata spoke, understanding what should be followed for the sake of the world, understanding that the Tathagata is eternal, being skilled in sin and non-sin, and the actions of a Bodhisattva, being skilled in place, time, wisdom, and one's own ability, and fully understanding, if possessing these eight characteristics, is a new Bodhisattva. Possessing these forty characteristics, that which possesses the Dharma of mindfulness of the body is called a new Bodhisattva. Whoever does not possess forty qualities, but has half or half of half, that should be understood as a son or daughter of a lineage who has correctly entered the Great Vehicle, and is not included in the compassion of a Bodhisattva. Therefore, the conduct of a Bodhisattva is extremely difficult.

It is done. What is the supreme quality? Not having the thought of lust, and not even ejaculating in dreams, this should be understood as a person with causes, and it is the supreme quality of all the limbs of enlightenment. Manjushri, who became a youth, said this to the garland of fingers (venerable Angulimala): What is the meaning of saying "Tathagatagarbha, Tathagatagarbha"? If all sentient beings have the Tathagatagarbha, then all sentient beings will become Buddhas. Then, can all sentient beings kill, lie, drink alcohol, engage in sexual intercourse, take what is not given, and do all the paths of non-virtuous deeds? If the Buddha-nature exists in all sentient beings, then when will they be liberated and fully enter? If the Buddha-nature exists, then all will also commit the five inexpiable sins and the deeds of great desire. If all sentient beings have the nature of self, then they will liberate themselves, because there is no nature of self in the ripening of karma. Therefore, the world and I have no nature of self, and the absence of self in all is the teaching of the Buddha. The Blessed One said: All sentient beings have the Tathagatagarbha, covered by billions of afflictions, and abide like a butter lamp inside a vase. Furthermore, Manjushri, a son who tames, the Blessed One Light Protector, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, prophesied that from today in seven years, he will become a wheel-turning king endowed with Dharma, a king of Dharma. I will also pass into complete nirvana in seven days. That son who tames generated great joy, thinking: I have been prophesied by the all-knowing one to be a wheel-turning king, and there will surely be no mistake. He was overjoyed and said to his mother: Mother, please give me fish, meat, milk, sesame oil, yogurt, milk curd, semen, and husked grains. I will become strong. He mixed everything together and ate it, and as a result, he died at an inappropriate time, dying himself, and causing his own decline. Did the Blessed One, the Tathagata, speak falsely?
