Those, since we are born into a great lineage like this, why should we go begging from house to house for food? Those who do not go begging out of shame will learn from the Tathagata's begging and glorious body, and thus go begging. Venerable Subhuti, the Tathagata, seeing the necessity of the matter, went begging. Venerable Subhuti, furthermore, the Tathagatas will conform to the world, and conform in such a way as to fully ripen sentient beings. Venerable Subhuti, the Tathagata, seeing the necessity of the matter, went begging. Venerable Subhuti, furthermore, the Tathagata has no obscurations or shame, nor is he humble, nor does he have attachment, nor will he become attached, nor does he desire evil, and so on. Although he does not, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, goes begging in order to conform to the world and to fully ripen sentient beings. Venerable Subhuti, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, seeing the necessity of the matter, went begging. Venerable Subhuti, who can practice begging with such skillful means, such great compassion, and such completely pure meaning? He replied: Great one, I cannot do this. Great one, just as all dogs and cats cannot destroy Mount Sumeru, the king of mountains, and all foxes cannot show power or roar to the lion, the king of beasts, even for eons, so it is. Great one, all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas cannot show the Tathagata's conduct, skillful means, or great compassion. When this discourse on the Tathagata's skillful means and begging was taught, two thousand eight hundred people among the householder's family and those who came from other houses to listen to the Dharma generated the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment.

arose. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to that woman: Sister, where is your home now? That woman said: Venerable Subhuti, my home is not singular. Why is that? Venerable Subhuti, all those sentient beings who are skilled in the means of arranging happiness and are to be tamed are all my home. Said: Sister, the Tathagata does not give sensual pleasure to anyone. Said: Venerable Subhuti, the Tathagata speaks of the increase of virtuous Dharma and the decrease of non-virtuous Dharma for those monks who seek robes, alms, bedding, cushions, medicine for the sick, medicinal supplies, the homes of friends, relying on and attending to homes that give alms, making friends happy, relying on Khenpos and Acharyas, attending to them, and constantly serving them with reverence. Said: Sister, it is as you say. Said: Venerable Subhuti, therefore the Tathagata gives all sensual pleasures to sentient beings by such means. Said: Sister, how many sentient beings have you tamed by being skilled in the means of arranging happiness? Said: Venerable Subhuti, the forms of the stars in the three thousand great thousand world realms can be completely understood by counting, but I, skilled in the means of arranging happiness, have tamed sentient beings, and after taming them, I cannot know those who have been placed in the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment in that way. Said: Sister, what kind of happiness do you bestow upon those sentient beings? That woman said: Venerable Subhuti, there are also sentient beings who are fond of the happiness of Brahma, Venerable Subhuti, in order for those to attain the state of Brahma, I bestow upon them the happiness of immeasurable samadhi, and after bestowing it, I also place them in the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Venerable Subhuti, there are also sentient beings who are fond of the happiness of Indra, and for those sentient beings, I bestow the happiness of Indra.

And also establish them, and after establishing them, also lead them into unsurpassed and perfect enlightenment. Venerable Subhuti, among sentient beings, there are also those who delight in the joy of gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas. To those sentient beings, I also bestow the joy between mahoragas, and after establishing them, also lead them into unsurpassed and perfect enlightenment. Venerable Subhuti, among sentient beings, there are also those who delight in the joy of the kingdom of a Chakravartin king. There are also those who delight in the joy of ministers, townspeople, villagers, Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras. Among sentient beings, there are also those who delight in the joy of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Among sentient beings, there are also those who delight in the joy of flowers, incense, perfume, garlands, ointments, powders, umbrellas, banners, flags, and fly-whisks. Among sentient beings, there are also those who delight in the joy of gold, silver, jewels, pearls, beryl, conch shells, agate, crystal, red pearls, coral, the essence of stone, and various kinds of precious gems. Among sentient beings, there are also those who delight in the joy of the sound of large drums, clay drums, conch shells, cymbals, lutes, flutes, and various kinds of musical instruments. Venerable Subhuti, to those sentient beings, I also bestow all thoughts, joys, and amusements, and after establishing them, also lead them into unsurpassed and perfect enlightenment. Subhuti said: Great Lord, if the five objects of desire are obstacles to the noble path, how can they be subdued by establishing those? These two places are contradictory. Great Lord, it is difficult and wonderful that Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas subdue sentient beings with the very dharmas that obstruct the noble path! The end of the second chapter. Then, that woman, skilled in the means of arranging joy, obtained the unsurpassed.
