Or protected, or protected by relatives, or protected by siblings, or protected by family, or protected by friends, those people, because of those causes, cannot go to the Tathagata. If those people see the Tathagata going to villages and cities, they are satisfied and happy, very joyful and delighted, and generate contentment, and offer alms to the Tathagata. After offering, they also generate the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Bhikshu Rabjor, the Tathagata, seeing that benefit, goes for alms. Bhikshu Rabjor, furthermore, the gods of the four great king lineages offered bowls to the Tathagata, and the Tathagata accepted them. There, beings with little desire and little giving saw the Tathagata's bowl as full. Beings with great desire and much giving saw the Tathagata's bowl as not full, and those people offered as much as needed, filled the bowl, and generated the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Bhikshu Rabjor, the Tathagata, seeing that benefit, goes for alms. Bhikshu Rabjor, furthermore, if food, drink, and delicacies with a hundred flavors are poured into the Tathagata's bowl, those foods, drinks, and delicacies will not mix, but will exist just as they are in different containers. There, many beings such as gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, seeing such a miracle of the Tathagata's bowl, generate the mind of un-

And yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and many great reptiles, seeing such a miracle of the Tathagata's alms bowl, were amazed and generated the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. The Tathagata, seeing the reason for this, went for alms. Furthermore, Venerable Subhuti, the body of the Tathagata is completely solid and not hollow; it is as hard as a diamond. The Tathagata's body has no stomach or intestines, no feces, and no urine. However, he still goes for alms and eats food, but does not swallow it into his stomach. Gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, great reptiles, humans, and many non-humans, seeing this, generate the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Venerable Subhuti, the Tathagata, seeing the reason for this, goes for alms. Furthermore, Venerable Subhuti, when the Tathagata goes to villages and cities, many sentient beings offer alms, whether much or little, good or bad. Those sentient beings will not be able to exhaust the merits generated towards the Tathagata, and will experience many perfections of gods and humans, and that merit will not be exhausted until complete nirvana. Venerable Subhuti, the Tathagata, seeing the reason for this, goes for alms. Furthermore, Venerable Subhuti, the Tathagata is always in equipoise and does not fall from samadhi. There, if Brahma or non-Brahma, gods who dwell in the realm of form and have great power, see the Tathagata going for alms and not wavering from samadhi, they think, 'This one is striving for the benefit of sentient beings, not desiring food,' and they gain joy and generate the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment.

In order to generate the mind of enlightenment, Venerable Subhuti, the Tathagata, having seen the reason for things, thus goes for alms. Venerable Subhuti, if the Tathagata did not go for alms, and also did not eat food, then, sons and daughters of good families, those who have gone forth from home to homelessness in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, would also begin to not eat food. They would think: We also will not go for alms, nor will we eat food. In this way, they would also become weak from hunger, unable to realize the special qualities. In order for them to perfect the thought of attaining special qualities in the future, the Tathagata goes for alms and eats. Venerable Subhuti, the Tathagata, having seen the reason for things, thus goes for alms. Venerable Subhuti, furthermore, the Tathagata goes for alms in order to properly gather the noble lineages. Venerable Subhuti, furthermore, the Tathagata goes for alms out of compassion for future beings. Because in the future, Brahmins and householders who do not have faith will say this: If the teacher of these people does not go for alms himself, then why do these people go for alms? In order to prevent them from becoming too displeased with monks and nuns, thus he goes for alms. Therefore, they will also think this: The teacher of these people also goes for alms, so why should we not go for alms? They will also praise, and will also give alms, and will say this: This going for alms is the alms that comes from the scriptures. This conduct is praised by the Tathagata. Venerable Subhuti, the Tathagata, having seen the reason for things, thus goes for alms. Venerable Subhuti, furthermore, kings, ministers, Brahmins, householders, and sons of ministers, having generated faith in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, go forth from home to homelessness.
