Having sat down to one side, the venerable Subhūti said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, last night in my dream, the Tathāgata Bodhi

I saw a deity residing in the lotus treasury, who extended his golden right hand and placed it on my head, saying, 'Subhuti, you will hear the Dharma that you have never heard before.' World Honored One, what is this omen? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, this is an omen that sons or daughters of good families who desire the Dharma will hear the Dharma that they have never heard before. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the World Honored One: World Honored One, I will go to the great city of Rajagriha for alms. The World Honored One said: Subhuti, if you know the time, then go. Then, the venerable Subhuti, having been permitted by the World Honored One, bowed to the feet of the World Honored One with his head, and entered the great city of Rajagriha for alms. Then, the venerable Subhuti went to the great city of Rajagriha, begging for alms in order, and went to the residence of a householder, entered the porch, and sat silently. Then, from that house came a woman with a supreme form, beautiful to behold, adorned with fine ornaments, decorated with jewels, pearls, coral, and gold ornaments, shining brightly, with a radiant complexion and beautiful appearance. Then, that woman bowed her head to the feet of the venerable Subhuti and said to the venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, for what purpose do you stay in this porch? Subhuti said: Elder sister, I stay in this porch to seek alms. That woman said: Venerable Subhuti, do you still have the thought of seeking alms? Venerable Subhuti, have you not yet understood the true meaning of seeking alms? Subhuti said: Elder sister, I have understood the true meaning of seeking alms, but this body born of parents, nourished by rice and warm porridge, cannot survive without food. That woman said: Venerable Subhuti,

Becoming ceasing, birth ceases. Birth ceasing, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil cease, are they not manifestly realized? Subhuti said: Yes, I have manifestly realized cessation. Said: Venerable Subhuti, what ceases? What dharma should be diligently cultivated? Said: Yes, cessation is not any dharma that should be diligently cultivated. Said: Venerable Subhuti, if cessation is not any dharma that should be diligently cultivated, then how does the body of Venerable Subhuti survive by alms? Said: Yes, having entered cessation, the body survives by rising from the cessation of all feelings. Said: Venerable Subhuti, if one is forever liberated from suffering, how does your body begin to survive? Said: Yes, the Shravakas of the Blessed One wander for alms for the sake of the body's survival. Said: Therefore, has the Blessed One not shown Venerable Subhuti to be the foremost of those who abide without affliction? Said: Yes, it is so. Said: Is this without affliction walking or extremely walking? Said: Yes, it is not. Said: Then, for what reason does Venerable Subhuti wander for alms? Said: Yes, I do not wander for alms for the sake of strengthening the body, but for the sake of life, for the purpose of ceasing feelings, I wander for alms. Said: Venerable Subhuti, are you still robbed by feelings? Said: Yes, although I am not robbed by feelings, I wander for alms for the purpose of ceasing feelings. Said: Venerable Subhuti, without affliction is incomparable, for what reason is this? Because those who abide without affliction do not experience the feelings of body and mind. Without affliction is the same as body and mind.
