Is an emanation of the Tathagata. The Suchness of the Tathagata's form, as well as feelings, perceptions, formations, and the Suchness of consciousness, whatever it may be, my Suchness is also that, therefore I am an emanation of the Tathagata. Whatever the Suchness of the Tathagata may be, it will never become non-Suchness. Whatever my Suchness may be, and whatever the Suchness of all sentient beings may be, it will never become non-Suchness, therefore I am an emanation of the Tathagata. Whatever the Suchness of the Tathagata may be, it does not occasionally become Suchness, and whatever my Suchness may be, it also does not occasionally become Suchness, but is always Suchness itself. Therefore I am an emanation of the Tathagata. Whatever my Suchness may be, and whatever the Suchness of all sentient beings may be, and whatever the Suchness of all phenomena may be, it is truly as it is, and non-different, this is Suchness. Therefore I am an emanation of the Tathagata. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to that woman: Elder sister, do you know my mind through the power of the Tathagata? Or do you know it through your own wisdom? She replied: Venerable Subhuti, whether it be the Shravakas, or the Pratyekabuddhas, or the Bodhisattvas, or any ascetic with five supernormal powers, all those who know the minds of other sentient beings, they all know the minds of others through the power of the Buddha. Thus, the venerable Subhuti, who dwells in solitude, knows the minds of others through the power of the Buddha. Venerable Subhuti, just as a person with eyes can see forms by relying on the moon, the sun, fire, jewels, lamps, and stars, so too, Venerable Subhuti, from the darkness of ignorance, whoever knows the minds of others among those who dwell in the world, they all know by relying on the Tathagata. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to that woman: Elder sister, you this

Who are you, so full of pride, and where do you come from? Please tell me. The woman said: If the venerable Subhuti were to ask an emanation of the Tathagata, saying, 'Son of good family, who are you, and where do you come from? Please tell me,' how would he answer? He said: Great lady, there is no way to answer at all. She said: Venerable Subhuti, if one knows that all dharmas are characterized by the nature of emanation, what can I say to anyone? Furthermore, if someone were to ask the venerable Subhuti, 'Are you an ordinary person? Or a learner? Or an Arhat?' If they were to say that, how would you answer? Then, the venerable Subhuti entered into thought, thinking, 'How should I answer this great lady's question?' Then, from the sky, a voice came: Venerable Subhuti, tell this great lady what you have attained, realized, directly experienced, or understood by which you know you are an Arhat. Then, the venerable Subhuti, having heard that voice coming from the sky, said this to the woman: Great lady, I am neither an ordinary person, nor a learner, nor an Arhat. She said: Venerable Subhuti, how should I understand that? He said: Great lady, understand me as you would understand the imputation of an emanation of the Tathagata. She said: Venerable Subhuti is said to be the best and the worthy recipient among the Arhats, those who have exhausted the outflows, and those who abide without afflictions. He said: Great lady, I am not the best and the worthy recipient among the Arhats, those who have exhausted the outflows, and those who abide without afflictions. She said: Venerable Subhuti, in that case, wouldn't you be knowingly speaking a lie? He said: Great lady, if I were to cling to being the best and the worthy recipient among those who have exhausted the outflows and abide without afflictions, then I would be speaking a lie. Because I do not cling to that, I am speaking the truth and should not be called a liar. She said: Venerable Subhuti, you would not be deceiving the gods who see the truth and those who have gathered here to listen to the Dharma in any way, would you?
