The dharmas of hearing and, the dharmas of the solitary Buddhas and, the dharmas of the Buddhas and, the dharmas of all afflictions and, the dharmas of complete purification and, having form and, not having form and, having perception and, not having perception and, having characteristics and, not having characteristics and, conduct completely pure and, equality and, inequality and, body and, mind and, all dharmas as they are and, between not as they are, arising will occur. One should not investigate thus. What do you think, son of Maudgalyāyana? Does the Tathāgata manifestly awaken to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment? He said: It is not so. He said: Does the Tathāgata think of something other than suchness, something other than enlightenment suchness, something other than individual being suchness? The son of Maudgalyāyana said: It is not so. The boy said: Son of Maudgalyāyana, do you elaborate on what is without elaboration? The son of Maudgalyāyana said: I teach according to the worldly convention. The boy said: Son of Maudgalyāyana, the world is false, deceptive, illusory, enticing children. The son of Maudgalyāyana said: If this world is false, of the nature of deception, and this teaching is also false, of the nature of deception, why do you teach? He said: Son of Maudgalyāyana, all dharmas are unteachable, they are not to be taught, not to be attained, not to be realized, not to be abandoned, not to be fully known, not to be cultivated. The son of Maudgalyāyana said: Then for what purpose do you make offerings to the Tathāgata? The boy said: Son of Maudgalyāyana, do you take the Tathāgata, the giver, or the giving as an object? Then the venerable son of Maudgalyāyana became silent. The boy Ratnadatta said: Son of Maudgalyāyana, having thought about it, those who abandon becoming a Tathāgata and generate the mind in the Śrāvakayāna, those are badly obtained gains, thus he spoke. The son of Maudgalyāyana said: You then

Your age is very young, but your wisdom is like the ocean. Since when have you been learning these Dharmas? The boy Ratna-datta replied: All that is learned is perishable. Whatever is learnable is not true learning. That which is unlearned is the learning of the wise. The meaning you asked me about is the abiding of sentient beings' consciousness. Here, in all Dharmas, no arising can be found. Children conceive of enlightenment and samsara as real. And you, venerable one, are you still following the Dharma of children? Whether long or short, the wise do not discriminate. They understand that all Dharmas are without essence. Whether children or the Dharmas of children, or the Buddha's Dharma or the Victorious One, the wise do not differentiate, but view emptiness in this way. The great sage attained enlightenment, which is an examination of lineage. If this Dharma is unborn, how is nirvana attained? The Dharmas are extensively taught as limitless, and the liberation of sentient beings is also not substantial. For nirvana and samsara, understand them to be without difference. In this, in every way, there is nothing to add or subtract. For Dharmas without difference, the wise do not become confused. Children obtain and acquire, children attain nirvana. All of that accumulates in samsara. Conceit is the bondage of Mara. Whoever thinks in their mind, "I have attained," has attained nothing. Their rebirth will again fall into ignorance. Having dwelt in the essence of enlightenment, there is nothing seen and nothing abandoned. The enlightenment of the Buddhas is merely a term, not a reality. Enlightenment and nirvana cannot be expressed by terms. Those who see it correctly in that way completely understand the nature of Dharma. Then, the venerable Shariputra said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, since when has the boy Ratna-datta practiced this Dharma? The Blessed One replied: At the time when the Tathagata Dipamkara prophesied that I would attain forbearance of the unborn Dharma, this one was abiding in emptiness in the teachings of Dipamkara.
