He became the best of the bodhisattvas on earth. When I first generated the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, this one had attained forbearance and had completed three hundred thousand kalpas. Shariputra asked: Blessed One, what is the cause why the boy Ratnadatta has not attained unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment? What is the condition? The Blessed One said: Ask this boy Ratnadatta, and he will show you. Then the venerable Shariputra said this to the boy Ratnadatta: Why have you not attained unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment? Ratnadatta said: Because unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment is not an object, therefore I do not attain perfect enlightenment. Shariputra said: Then does the Tathagata, after attaining perfect enlightenment, still practice with an object? Ratnadatta said: If one holds that the Tathagata has attained perfect enlightenment, then if it becomes an object, speaking the Dharma will neither attain perfect enlightenment nor abandon it. Shariputra said: You practice the four dharmas and are equally fully matured, in what forbearance do you abide? The boy Ratnadatta said: I have not truly seen even one dharma as fully accomplished, what to say of four? What is truly accomplished here? This which is called the Dharma of Discrimination is the object. This which is called Enlightenment is the object. This which is called the Tathagata is the grasping. This which is called Liberation is the proliferation. Shariputra said: Son of good family, you practice such dharmas, and by being born miraculously, the Buddhas appear manifestly, and you are always ordained, this is wonderful! Then at that time the boy Ratnadatta spoke these verses: Birth and suchness, non-birth, both are proliferation, They are the ground of universal understanding and the realm of Mara's activity. Holding to the dharmas of body and so forth, the arrogance of mind desires, Gods and non-gods

Fools perish here. The Victorious Ones think they have found the undiluted nectar. Thus, those who apply their minds intensely, I beseech the Buddhas to protect them. Even if attained, it is not attained by those who guide. Here, many beings, Having renounced, boast of being self-born. Deluded by the object of the mind, Those who slander the teachings. Saying, 'I have attained the nectar,' Those with the pride of attainment speak. The teachings of the protector, the Lion of the Shakyas, Are without elaboration. The mind, in all its aspects, The mind does not realize its own nature. Thus, the view spoken by the guides, That view is without inherent existence. The Victorious Ones with eyes have spoken, On the view, there is no view. Therefore, those with wisdom, Do not cling to thinking they are liberated. Those who meditate clinging to signs, Become deluded by focusing on the self. Some who are not wise, Reject the emptiness that is not genuine. Things are like dreams and illusions, And also measured by their own minds. Those who are not wise, those things, Speak of nirvana for the sake of destruction. Even on the body, relying on support, The perception of discipline is destroyed. Even on the objects of the mind, The perception of meditation is destroyed. Likewise, even focusing on wisdom, The perception of seeds is confused. Those who are wise in the world, Call them thieves of the Dharma. On such kinds of Dharmas, The realm of Dharma is clear light, without afflictions. If so, what is the meaning of renunciation? How do you tell me? All Dharmas are without difference, These are like echoes. Those who are wise, never, Do not contemplate the realm of activity of the noble ones. Non-otherness is suchness, It will not come to other places. On the unchanging of all Dharmas, What is the use of measuring by renunciation? Then, Manjushri, having become a youth, said this to the boy Ratnadatta: Boy, what is the word 'bodhi' a synonym for? Ratnadatta replied: Manjushri, bodhi has no synonym. Manjushri said: Why do you think and say that? Ratnadatta replied: Manjushri, the nature of Dharma is inconceivable, how should I think and declare it?

Manjushri said: How should one instruct the novice Bodhisattva with advice? How should one subsequently instruct him? Ratnakara said: One should say thus: Do not abandon desire, do not destroy hatred, do not eliminate ignorance, do not move upwards from your own body, engage in non-virtue, do not cut off views, do not reveal all actions, completely hold onto the aggregates, make the elements whole, engage in the sense bases, do not transcend the realm of children, realize non-virtue, abandon virtue, do not keep the Buddha in mind, do not contemplate the Dharma, do not make offerings to the Sangha, do not properly take the vows, do not seek nirvana, do not cross the river. With such advice, one should advise the novice Bodhisattva, and one should instruct him accordingly. Why is that? Because the Dharma nature of all phenomena abides, and this is only abiding. Those children are prophesied to be born into the Dharma, and they are prophesied to be extinguished into the Dharma. This realm of Dharma is well distinguished by non-discrimination, and whoever thus follows and realizes the nature of these phenomena is enlightenment. If, after advising in this way, he is not afraid, not fearful, and does not become alarmed, then know that this Bodhisattva is irreversible, and has a share in the irreversible ground, and one should repeatedly generate joy with this advice. At that time, eight monks with characteristics, abandoning this Dharma category without relying on it, left that assembly, and died with hot blood coming from their mouths. After dying, they were born into the great crying hell. Then, Manjushri, who had become a youth, said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, look at how much harm those monks have suffered from hearing this Dharma category! The Bhagavan said: Manjushri, do not say that. If these monks had not heard this Dharma category, they would never be born in a good rebirth, even for millions of kalpas.
