The first chapter of the sutra called "Earth", which is a Mahayana text. Noble son, furthermore, a Bodhisattva, a great Bodhisattva, having initially generated the mind of enlightenment, should diligently strive in the ten perfections. What are the ten? Noble son, how should that Bodhisattva, a great Bodhisattva, diligently strive in these ten perfections? Noble son, in this case, the Bodhisattva, a great Bodhisattva, practices generosity, upholds ethics, cultivates patience, exerts diligence, meditates in meditation, ignites wisdom, becomes skilled in skillful means, establishes aspirations, engages in strength, and engages in knowledge. Noble son, how should that Bodhisattva, a great Bodhisattva, diligently strive in the perfection of generosity? Noble son, in this case, the Bodhisattva, a great Bodhisattva, diligently strives in giving food, drink, vehicles, clothing, and ornaments, and diligently strives even in giving feet. Noble son, how should that Bodhisattva diligently strive in giving food? Noble son, in this case, that Bodhisattva thinks thus: The so-called giving of food is a supreme expression that brings about life, complexion, strength, and happiness. Therefore, I must diligently strive in giving food, and I must certainly give the gift of food. By giving that gift of food, it becomes giving life and giving happiness. Then, at that time, the Bhagavan spoke these verses: If one gives the gift of food, then life and complexion, strength and happiness, the fifth one increases, it is given by the wise. By giving food, one obtains joy, long life, strength, and happiness.

Joyful transformation. Those who are joyful and have support will become endowed with unobstructed courage. Rich and wealthy, possessing splendor. People become intelligent and wise because of this. Endowed with merit and virtuous and peaceful. Giving food will make it so. So, how does one strive to give drink? Noble son, the bodhisattva thinks like this: Giving drink is called the supreme word that can eliminate all afflictive thirst. Therefore, I must give the gift of drink. When he gives the gift of drink, like the prayer praised by the Buddha, with this gift of drink, may I cause all the afflictions and the ocean of thirst of all sentient beings to dry up completely. May I also satisfy them with the drink of the taste of liberation. He prays like this. There is also a subsequent verse to this: After the ocean of afflictive thirst, stirred by the crocodile of old age and death, has dried up, I will satisfy people with the drink of the taste of liberation. By giving drink, that wise one will not be born into the suffering of the preta realm, which is burning everywhere and extremely burning, and the harm of thirst will not occur. So, how does one strive to give a ride? Noble son, the bodhisattva thinks like this: Giving a ride is called the supreme word that brings happiness and gathers all the bases of magical powers. Therefore, I must give the gift of a ride, whether it is giving a vehicle, a palanquin, or giving a horse, an elephant, I must give it. When he gives those rides, like the prayer praised by the Buddha, with this gift of a ride, may I gather happiness and the bases of magical powers for all sentient beings. It is said like this: By giving a vehicle, may all sentient beings always attain the Great Vehicle and attain the feet of magical powers. By giving a ride, the great ascetic can go from Buddha land to Buddha land, as swiftly as a wise bird, and walk in the sky with magical powers.

So, how does one strive diligently in giving clothes? Noble son, the Bodhisattva thinks like this: Giving clothes is a noble expression that makes one know shame, be conscientious, and have a completely pure complexion. I must give the gift of clothes. When he gives the gift of clothes, like the aspiration spoken by the Buddha, may this gift of clothes make me cause all sentient beings to know shame, be conscientious, and have a completely pure complexion. And make this aspiration: By this gift of clothes, may I cause all sentient beings to know shame, purify conscientiousness, and may their complexion also become pure. Giving clothes is extremely auspicious, always possessing good lineage, having a beautiful appearance, that person will become knowing of shame, that person will become famous and fortunate. So, how does one strive diligently in giving ornaments? Noble son, the Bodhisattva thinks like this: Giving ornaments is a noble expression that makes one fully possess the thirty-two marks of a great person and the eighty minor marks. I must give the gift of ornaments, whether it is a gold ornament, a jewel, a pearl, lapis lazuli, conch shell, agate, or coral ornament. When he gives the gift of ornaments, like the aspiration spoken by the Buddha, may this gift of ornaments make me see the bodies of all sentient beings adorned with marks and minor marks. And make this aspiration: By the gift of gold ornaments, may I see all sentient beings adorned with marks, and may I also seek enlightenment. By the gift of jewels and pearls, wherever they are born, may a rain of precious things fall in those places where they are born. So, how does one strive diligently in giving lamps? Noble son, the Bodhisattva thinks like this: Giving lamps is a noble expression that makes the divine eye completely pure.
