Son, ask the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, whatever you wish to ask, and I will answer according to what you ask, satisfying your heart. After saying this, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, like a supreme lion roaring in a mountain cave, valley, hillside, crevice, or meadow, the jewel on the crown of men, said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, what should a son or daughter of good family diligently strive for when they first generate the mind of enlightenment? After saying this, the Blessed One praised the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, like a supreme lion roaring in a mountain cave, valley, hillside, crevice, or meadow, the jewel on the crown of men, saying: Well done! Son of good family, well done! Son of good family, it is good that you think of asking the Tathagata this question. Therefore, son of good family, listen carefully and keep it in mind, and I will explain it to you. The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, like a supreme lion roaring in a mountain cave, valley, hillside, crevice, or meadow, the jewel on the crown of men, replied to the Blessed One: Good. Then he listened to the teachings of the Blessed One. The Blessed One said to him: Son of good family, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva first generates the mind of enlightenment, they should diligently strive to practice the ten paths of virtuous actions. Son of good family, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva diligently strive to practice the ten paths of virtuous actions? Son of good family, here, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abandons killing, and even abandons wrong views. Son of good family, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abandon killing? Son of good family, here, the Bodhisattva thinks: Life, even for tiny creatures like ants, is painful, pitiable, and beloved.

It is pleasing. Because for me, this life is both precious and beloved, both pleasing and satisfying, so no one should kill me, or cause me to be killed, or approve of killing. I also should not kill anyone, or cause anyone to be killed, or approve of killing. Son of good family, in this way, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abandons killing. Regarding this, it should be said: Even in the womb, life is precious to all beings. My life is precious to me, therefore I do not kill any living beings. Then, what is abandoning taking what is not given? Son of good family, regarding this, the Bodhisattva thinks thus: The so-called wealth, even to those of low caste and the poor, is precious and beloved, both pleasing and satisfying. For me, this wealth is also precious and beloved, both pleasing and satisfying, so no one should steal my wealth, or cause me to be stolen from, or approve of stealing. I also should not steal anyone's wealth, or cause anyone to be stolen from, or approve of stealing. Son of good family, in this way, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abandons taking what is not given. Regarding this, it should be said: Even wood and clods of earth, and things lost by others, for those who regard their father's wealth as precious, they do not steal wealth. Then, what is abandoning sexual misconduct? Son of good family, regarding this, the Bodhisattva thinks thus: The so-called wife, even to beings in the animal realm, is precious and beloved, both pleasing and satisfying. For me, this wife is also precious and beloved, both pleasing and satisfying, so no one should steal my wife, or cause me to be stolen from, or approve of stealing, or forcibly oppress and enjoy themselves to the fullest. I also should not steal anyone's wife, or cause anyone to be stolen from, or approve of stealing, or forcibly oppress and enjoy themselves to the fullest. Son of good family, in this way, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abandons sexual misconduct. Regarding this
