Even if struck on the ground, do not harbor resentment in your mind. Do not be impatient with it, have no liking for it, and do not generate impatience. If you act in this way, then the Bodhisattva is practicing the perfection of patience, and the body will also fully take on a golden color. Son of Sharadvati, the venerable one, therefore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should possess the power of patience and be of a nature that is willing to accept. Why is that? It is because, being patient and willing to accept is the perfection of patience, which will bring one closer to omniscience and keep one far from the sufferings of samsara. If a Bodhisattva desires to attain the level of a Shravaka or a Pratyekabuddha, then the Bodhisattva has fallen away from the perfection of patience. Why is that? Even if one has accepted so much suffering on the body, if one desires to attain the level of a Shravaka or a Pratyekabuddha, then the Bodhisattva has abandoned his own field of activity and should also know that he is dwelling in the field of activity of others. It was said: Venerable Gangpo, by how much is it said that a Bodhisattva is acting in the field of activity of others? It was said: Son of Sharadvati, the venerable one, if a Bodhisattva desires to attain the level of a Shravaka or a Pratyekabuddha, or the mental activity of a Shravaka, or the mental activity of a Pratyekabuddha, or the path of a Shravaka, or the path of a Pratyekabuddha, whatever one desires, then by that much alone is it said that a Bodhisattva is acting in the field of activity of others. It was said: Venerable Gangpo, what is the Bodhisattva's own field of activity? It was said: This refers to the mental activity of the six perfections endowed with omniscience, namely, the perfection of generosity, the perfection of ethics, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom. These are the Bodhisattva's field of activity, and if one practices these, then the Bodhisattva is practicing in his own field of activity. The evil demon will not find an opportunity in this, just like a bone...

Just as the fox cannot find an opportunity, and being unable to find an opportunity, it becomes discouraged and leaves. Similarly, son of Sharadvati, when a Bodhisattva practices the six perfections, the evil one cannot find an opportunity, and being unable to find an opportunity, it becomes discouraged and leaves. Son of Sharadvati, if the evil one were to manifest as many evil ones as there are sentient beings in the three-thousand great thousand world realms, and each evil one were surrounded by retinues of that same number, even then, they would have no chance of finding an opportunity with a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who practices the six perfections, and being unable to find an opportunity, they would become discouraged and leave, just like the turtle and the fox. Son of Sharadvati, therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should think like this: How should I act so that my mind does not become separated from the six perfections? If that happens, the evil one will not find an opportunity with me. One should also not generate such a thought. He said: Venerable one, to what extent is a Bodhisattva recognized as the work of a demon? He said: Son of Sharadvati, not listening to the perfections is to be recognized as the work of the demon of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Not practicing the perfections is to be recognized as the work of the demon of a Bodhisattva. The evil one dwells nearby in order to hinder my omniscience, and a Bodhisattva should not generate anger or impatience towards him because of that. If one acts in that way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is practicing the perfection of patience. A Bodhisattva should generate the thought: After I have attained unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, I will teach the Dharma in order to cause sentient beings to abandon desire, hatred, and delusion. If a Bodhisattva Mahasattva gains mindfulness at that time, then he has subdued the evil one. When a Bodhisattva becomes separated from the mental activity of all omniscience, then I am not his field of activity.
