It should be known that the nature of the earth is bright and possesses great power. Said: O long-lived one, therefore I ask you this, please answer as you can bear. O long-lived son of Sharadvati, for example, between the gold of the Jambu River and brass, which is more vast, more beautiful, more radiant, and more precious? Said: O long-lived Kashyapa, the gold of the Jambu River is more vast, more beautiful, more radiant, and more precious. Said: O long-lived son of Sharadvati, the patience of the Hearers is seen as like the light of brass. The patience of the Bodhisattva is seen as like the light of the gold of the Jambu River. O long-lived son of Sharadvati, furthermore, if someone were to cut off the limbs of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, then, just as the amount of sand in the great Ganges River can be measured, but the amount of these bodies cannot be measured. Regarding the cutting off of the limbs of my body, one should generate the thought that they have surpassed Mount Sumeru. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva, correctly seeing the essential point of this meaning, even if the body is cut or pierced, should not generate hatred, but should dedicate all the roots of goodness born from loving-kindness to omniscient wisdom. Thus, it should be known that the Bodhisattva is not separated from the perfection of patience. O long-lived son of Sharadvati, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva who desires to manifestly awaken to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment should make the mind like the earth, make the mind like water, make the mind like fire, make the mind like wind, and make the mind like space. Said: O long-lived Kashyapa, how does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva make the mind like the earth, the mind like water, the mind like fire, the mind like wind, and the mind like space? Said: O long-lived son of Sharadvati, for example, the earth, even if smeared with pleasing paints,

Without following attachment, even if smeared with other unpleasant things, one will not become angry. Similarly, a Bodhisattva should not follow attachment to pleasant forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations. One should not become angry with unpleasant forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations. One should not generate impatience or weak joy, and one should not generate harmful thoughts. In this way, the Bodhisattva's mind is like the earth. In this way, the mind is like water, fire, and wind. How is the mind like the sky? Like the sky, even if smeared with pleasant smears, one will not follow attachment, and even if there are other unpleasant things like feces, one will not become angry. Similarly, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should not follow attachment to pleasant forms, and one should not become angry with unpleasant forms. Similarly, one should not follow attachment to pleasant sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations. One should not become angry with unpleasant tactile sensations, and one should not generate impatience or weak joy. In this way, the mind of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should be understood as being like the sky. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, in this way, the mind of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is like the earth, the mind is like water, the mind is like fire, the mind is like wind, and the mind is like the sky. Said: Venerable, since being like the sky is immeasurable, is the Bodhisattva also immeasurable? Said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, in this regard, a Bodhisattva should contemplate the mind of the body as being like the sky. By thinking and observing in this way, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is capable and skillful in accepting the touch of sticks, the touch of clods, and the touch of weapons. Similarly, relying on the Prajnaparamita, one should separately examine all bodies

Moreover, they fully uphold the perfection of patience, and whatever sufferings there are of hell beings, whatever fires of hell beings there are, and the weapons and the touch of sticks of hell beings, bodhisattvas, having fully grasped them with the perfection of wisdom, have the power to accept them. Whatever acceptance there is, that is the perfection of patience. Why is that? Because from beginningless samsara, they have individually experienced those sufferings, and having experienced the sufferings, they have not obtained the fruit of stream-entry, nor is it the fruit of once-returner, nor is it the fruit of non-returner, nor is it arhatship, nor have they obtained solitary enlightenment. Bodhisattvas, great beings, having correctly and repeatedly seen this power of meaning, should accept those sufferings. For example, if someone eats food with a hundred flavors, they are satisfied, delighted, pleased, and happy, and joy and comfort arise, and they become exceedingly happy. Similarly, when a bodhisattva sees a beggar, even if that person wants to cause physical suffering, just as an arhat with exhausted defilements feels joy, faith, and reverence when seeing the Thus-Gone One, so too, a bodhisattva should generate compassion towards that beggar. Having generated compassion, they should dedicate everything to omniscience. Having dedicated it, one should know that the bodhisattva mahasattva abides in the perfection of patience. The Second Chapter, "The Perfection of Patience." Furthermore, Sharadvatiputra, a bodhisattva mahasattva, even if reviled, does not revile in return, but only practices patience. Why is that? It is because they have not abandoned omniscience. Even if beaten, they do not strike back. Even if angered, they do not become angry. Even if threatened, they do not threaten in return. Even if insulted, they do not insult in return, but only practice patience. Why is that? It is because they have not abandoned omniscience. If someone pierces them with short spears and arrows,
