Arya Five Perfections Sutra of the Great Vehicle Arya Five Perfections Sutra of the Great Vehicle In Sanskrit: Āryapañcapāramitānirdeśanāmamahāyānasūtra. In Tibetan: Arya Five Perfections Sutra of the Great Vehicle. Volume 1. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti. Together with a great community of twelve hundred and fifty monks, all of whom were Arhats, their defilements exhausted, without defilements, having attained power, their minds completely liberated, their wisdom completely liberated, knowers, great elephants, having done what needed to be done, having accomplished what needed to be accomplished, having cast off their burdens, having attained their own benefit, having completely exhausted the bonds of existence, their minds completely liberated by perfect knowledge, having power over all sentient beings. Having completely crossed over to the supreme shore, and mostly Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who were young, bound by one birth, liberated from existence according to the thoughts of sentient beings, completely holding onto the arising of existence, all of whom were non-returning from unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, and dwelling together. Furthermore, gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas honored, respected, revered, and made offerings to the Blessed One, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, Possessing Knowledge and Conduct, Gone to Bliss, Knower of the World, Supreme Person, Tamer of Beings, Unequaled, Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, and beginning with this, taught the Dharma to the four assemblies regarding these six perfections. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Sharadvatiputra: "Sharadvatiputra, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the perfection of generosity, he should give without any apprehension." When he had spoken thus, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the

Then he pleaded with the Blessed One, saying: "Blessed One, the Blessed One is the root of all dharmas. Blessed One, the Blessed One is the lord of all dharmas. Blessed One, the Blessed One is the teacher of all dharmas. Therefore, whatever the monks can hold from what is heard from the Blessed One, may the Blessed One himself explain it to the monks." After pleading in this way, the Blessed One remained silent. After pleading for the second time, the Blessed One said: "Son of Sharadvati, I entrust to you, starting from the perfection of generosity of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas. Be brave!" Then, the venerable son of Sharadvati, having received the opportunity from the Blessed One, through the power of the Blessed One, first taught and subsequently showed the perfection of generosity of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, saying: "Blessed One, here, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the perfection of generosity, he should first aim at omniscience and give alms. If a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva aims at omniscience and gives alms, then that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is fully upholding the perfection of generosity. It is not the case that a Bodhisattva, falling into views, gives alms or dedicates it to the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground. Why is that? It is in order to know that fear." Then, the venerable Maitreya's son said to the venerable son of Sharadvati: "Venerable one, why is it known as the fear of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva?" He replied: "Because it may happen that they will have the same result as the Hearers, therefore it should be known as fear." Then, the venerable Maitreya's son said to the venerable son of Sharadvati: "Venerable son of Sharadvati, whatever generosity the Bodhisattva gives, and the Hearer Arhat

What is the difference in the giving of alms that one wishes to make manifest? What is the distinction? He said: Venerable one, the distinction is this: one makes it fully ripen in the place of the Hearer, and the other makes it fully ripen in the state of omniscience. Why is that? Venerable one, for example, a man thinks, 'May I become a king,' and gives alms with the aim of becoming a king. Another man thinks, 'May I dwell in the land of that king,' and desires to accept his commands, and gives alms and thus ripens it. Can that man suppress the king's position that the former man aimed at? Venerable one, in the same way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva gives alms with the aim of omniscience and ripens it. The follower of the Hearer Vehicle ripens the alms he gives in the place of the Hearer, as an Arhat. If one wishes to make the noble Hearer a close attendant of the Bodhisattva, does that man have the power and ability to ripen that alms into omniscience? Furthermore, Venerable one, with whatever intention one gives alms, there is no intention to ripen that alms into omniscience. This ripening of alms into a Hearer is the distinction between the follower of the Bodhisattva Vehicle and the follower of the Hearer Vehicle who dwells in the place of an Arhat. Venerable one, for example, a man thinks, 'By this alms, may I become a merchant, or a householder, or Brahma,' and gives alms in this way, this can be regarded as the alms of the Hearer Vehicle. Then, Venerable Jātimātṛka's son said to Venerable Śāradvatīputra: Venerable one, this is wonderful! Śāradvatīputra has spoken very well! Venerable Śāradvatīputra, for example, a man takes a hundred thousand kārṣāpaṇas and goes to any wealthy householder and says: These hundred thousand kārṣāpaṇas are for you.
