Those who wish to attain Buddhahood should instruct and guide others in the six perfections. By doing so, they draw near to omniscience, and this bestows upon sentient beings the state of an Arhat. Sharadvatiputra, thus, a Bodhisattva who, having seen my teachings, desires to fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, should instruct and guide others in the six perfections. This is to engage for the benefit and happiness of immeasurable sentient beings. Sharadvatiputra, in this way, when a Bodhisattva, a great being, abides in the perfection of moral discipline, they think, 'May all sentient beings become endowed with moral discipline through this moral discipline.' Thus, they fully ripen and think of all sentient beings. If any sentient being experiences happiness or joy, and upon hearing that sound, the minds of those sentient beings are without harm and enter into the count of moral discipline, then the single thought generated by a Bodhisattva abiding in the perfection of moral discipline does not even come close to the former stream of merit, not even by a hundredth part. Not even by a thousandth part, a hundred thousandth part, a number, a part, a count, an example, or a cause does it come close. In whatever way a Bodhisattva fully ripens moral discipline for the sake of all sentient beings, in that way, the Bodhisattva, the great being, is uplifted by the perfection of moral discipline. Thus, a Bodhisattva abides in the perfection of moral discipline. The sixth chapter on the Perfection of Moral Discipline is complete. Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Blessed One, 'Blessed One, what should be regarded as a Bodhisattva? For how long should a Bodhisattva practice to be regarded as a Bodhisattva? What about those who instruct and guide sentient beings in the perfection of generosity, the perfection of moral discipline, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom? The perfection of generosity...'

From then until the perfection of wisdom, he completely aspires to omniscience for the sake of all sentient beings. And he says these words: 'May this generosity of mine enable miserly beings to attain giving. May this discipline of mine enable immoral beings to attain discipline. May this patience of mine enable beings with harmful minds and beings with angry minds to attain patience. May this diligence of mine enable lazy beings to attain diligence. May this meditation of mine enable beings who engage in discursive thoughts and beings who are distracted to attain meditation. May this wisdom of mine enable beings with wrong wisdom and the ignorant to attain wisdom.' Thus speaking, just as from ground to ground, when he thus completely aspires, Blessed One, it should be known that that Bodhisattva Mahasattva will appear in a kalpa. After thus requesting, the Blessed One said this to the venerable son of Sharadvati: 'Son of Sharadvati, that Bodhisattva Mahasattva who thus completely aspires should be known to appear in five hundred kalpas. If a Bodhisattva, endowed with this skillful means, desires to manifest complete enlightenment to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment among the thousand Buddhas of this Fortunate Kalpa, and makes this aspiration: 'How can I make the lower realms empty?' And, 'May there be hundreds of thousands of millions of Arhats in my first gathering of Shravakas.' Son of Sharadvati, I say that the Bodhi of that Bodhisattva will be accomplished in a thousand kalpas. If he delights in thus completely aspiring, then those forms, those signs, and those marks should be known to be those of a Bodhisattva appearing in five hundred kalpas, and it should be known that he is a non-returning Bodhisattva.' Request: Blessed One, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva has taught the Paramitas.

Hearing this will bring joy. What is the reason for that? It is because Bodhisattvas are not abandoned by the Buddhas, the Bhagavat. If a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, upon hearing this teaching on the Perfection of Wisdom, feels joy even for just one day and abides pervaded by supreme joy, then it should be known that this Bodhisattva has entered the Great Vehicle for a long time. If they abide pervaded for two days, then it should be known that this Bodhisattva has entered for a very long time. If they abide with a joyful mind for seven days, then it should be known that this Bodhisattva, even among those who have entered the Great Vehicle for a long time, has entered the Great Vehicle for the longest time. Then, the Venerable Sharadvatiputra said this to the Bhagavat: "Bhagavat, according to my understanding of the meaning spoken by the Bhagavat, from what point onwards will the roots of virtue of that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva greatly increase, and having become skilled in means, after listening to the Perfections of Wisdom, they will appear after seven kalpas? This teaching of the Perfections of Wisdom by the Bhagavat is my confidence due to the blessings of the Tathagata." The Bhagavat said: "Sharadvatiputra, it is just so, it is just so. These aspects and these signs should be known as indicating that a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva has entered the Great Vehicle for a long time. Thus, it should be known that this Bodhisattva is irreversible. If a Bodhisattva does not obtain supreme joy when explaining the Perfections of Wisdom, then it should be known that this Bodhisattva has newly entered the Great Vehicle. Sharadvatiputra, I say that a Bodhisattva who has newly entered the Great Vehicle, listening to the Perfections of Wisdom and studying the Perfections of Wisdom, will gradually become omniscient. Asked: "Bhagavat, to what extent do the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, not abandon the Bodhisattvas? It is truly wonderful!" The Bhagavat said: "Shara-
