Son, how can all phenomena, which are like illusions, be completely dedicated to omniscience? He replied: Venerable Gambo, if these phenomena were not like illusions, then it would be utterly impossible to completely dedicate them to omniscience. Because when these phenomena become like illusions, then these phenomena can be completely dedicated to omniscience. In this way, the bodhisattva's effort is also powerful, and his diligence is also extremely perfect. He replied: Where is the place of powerful effort? He replied: This is the place of skillful means. Relying on skillful means, like this, one should know that these phenomena abide in skillful means. One does not become accustomed to it, nor does one fall into the extreme of reality. For example, a person sits on the top of a cliff, holding umbrellas in both hands, holding them tightly, leaning on the edge of the cliff, with one foot suspended in the air, looking at the terrifying cliff. Even if he is placed on the cliff, those umbrellas block the wind, and the force of the wind will not make him fall. Similarly, the person sitting on the edge of the cliff, even though he is on the cliff, relies on the action of the umbrellas blocking the wind, so he can see the cliff and will not fall. Venerable Gambo, similarly, the bodhisattva mahasattva who is skilled in means also relies on skillful means, and with great compassion, he truly knows and observes the phenomena that are like illusions. Because he is upheld by skillful means, he will not fall into the habit of these phenomena, nor will his mind be discouraged, nor will he directly realize these phenomena. Why? Because the terrible great cliff is like this: directly realizing that all phenomena are empty. In this way, the bodhisattva mahasattva puts on great armor and is upheld by skillful means. One should know that he possesses the pure aggregate of the perfection of discipline. What should be created manifest, and what should be the Dharma that should be fully awakened, and

Wherever one does not follow along in seeing, that itself is the discipline of a Bodhisattva. One should understand that this itself is the perfection of the discipline of a Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is completely grasped by the perfection of skillful means should be understood as being completely grasped by all the perfections. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is inseparable from all the perfections should be understood as abiding in the gateway of omniscience itself, and goes forth having subdued all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Why is that? It is because he desires the jewel of omniscience. Venerable Gangpo, for example, a person enters a cave, and as he goes there, he sees earth, gold, and silver on the left and right sides. The more he goes inside, the more he sees the left and right sides filled with earth, gold, and silver, and he also sees them filled with strings of pearls. If he develops attachment to those, he will completely lose the priceless jewels inside. If he does not develop attachment to the earth, gold, silver, and strings of pearls there, he will surpass those and go to the place where the priceless jewels are, and he will see them and possess those priceless jewels. Venerable Gangpo, similarly, a Bodhisattva who is unskilled in means, when hearing the praise, miracles, or magical powers of the Shravaka's ground or the Pratyekabuddha's ground, comes there and becomes attached to them, and thus loses the jewel of omniscience itself. Venerable Gangpo, a Bodhisattva who is skilled in means, when hearing the praise of the Shravaka's ground or the Pratyekabuddha's ground, does not pay attention to them, but subdues and surpasses them. He does not develop attachment, nor does he become fixated, nor does he crave, and because he does not crave or pay attention to those, he subdues and surpasses them. Why is that? Because the Shravaka's ground and the Pratyekabuddha's ground, these two grounds are all

These are obstacles. Having transcended these, one will gradually obtain the jewel of omniscience itself. O fortunate one, just as a person transcends clumps of dirt, gold, silver, and pearls, and without generating attachment to them, enters into them and possesses those priceless jewels, he himself enjoys them, and he also becomes one who truly establishes beings. O fortunate one, similarly, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is skilled in means, without tasting these two flavors, transcends them and gradually possesses the jewel of omniscience itself. If a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is extremely attached to these two, then it should be known that he is not skilled in means. Therefore, one who is completely grasped by skillful means should not trust in it, and until he has manifestly awakened to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, a Bodhisattva should not trust in it. Said: O fortunate Sharadvatiputra, what is it that a non-retreating Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should not trust in? Said: One should not trust in the six perfections. Cultivating familiarity with the six perfections, before long one will manifestly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. He should generate the thought: I will awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment after a long time, and I should practice the six perfections as if my head and clothes were on fire. O fortunate one, furthermore, if a Bodhisattva who desires to manifestly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, such conduct arises: May I uphold all the names with this discipline. That Bodhisattva has entered into discrimination. What is discrimination? It should be known as the broken discipline of that Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should not, for the sake of names, unsurpassed
