intending to overwhelm their discipline, it is simply intending to contend with the Thus-Gone One. Venerable, just as someone who intends to contend with the king's son is simply intending to contend with the king, so too, Venerable, whoever thinks to overwhelm the discipline of a Bodhisattva is simply thinking to overwhelm the discipline of the Thus-Gone One. Why is that? Because Bodhisattvas, great beings, are difficult to overcome. Venerable, just as if someone were without arms and legs and said, "I will jump from here to the shore on the other side of the great ocean," that person who says that should be recognized as boasting with excessive pride. Venerable, similarly, whether it be a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha who says, "I will overwhelm the discipline of a Bodhisattva," Venerable, in this way, that person should be recognized as boasting. Why is that? Because Bodhisattvas, great beings, are like a poisonous ocean. Just as that person, being without arms and legs, desires to jump into the ocean, so too, it is impossible for a person of the Hearer's Vehicle or the Solitary Buddha's Vehicle to overwhelm the discipline of a Bodhisattva without possessing the qualities of a Bodhisattva. Why is that? Because Bodhisattvas, great beings, possess immeasurable discipline. He said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, why do Bodhisattvas possess immeasurable discipline? He said: Venerable, because they desire to completely liberate immeasurable beings with immoral discipline from immoral discipline, and because they desire to establish them in discipline. He said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, what is meant by the term "immoral discipline"? He said: For example, what is called immoral discipline is clinging to self, clinging to what is mine, the notion of an object, the notion of a sentient being,

Clinging to life, clinging to person, clinging to existence, clinging to non-existence are empty words. If these afflictions and others exist, it is called breaking the precepts. Therefore, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, wishing to establish immeasurable beings in morality and entering this vehicle, possessing immeasurable morality, are not easily overcome by the Shravakas or Pratyekabuddhas. A Bodhisattva is like this: for the sake of dedicating all the perfections of morality to omniscience, even by name alone, he overcomes the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, how can the morality with outflows overcome the morality without outflows? Said: Venerable, here, the morality without outflows is generated for the benefit of oneself, while the morality of the Bodhisattva is dedicated for the sake of immeasurable beings. Therefore, the morality of the Bodhisattva overcomes the morality without outflows. Venerable, furthermore, if the morality of the Bodhisattva achieves a certain definite measure, then the morality without outflows will not be overcome, and his morality will not become a perfection. Because it is dedicated for the sake of immeasurable beings, therefore the morality of the Bodhisattva overcomes the morality without outflows. Venerable, for example, when the sun appears, the light of all kinds of creatures, such as fireflies, is overwhelmed. Venerable, similarly, the morality of the Bodhisattva, dedicated to omniscience, also overwhelms the light of the morality of other heretical practitioners, wanderers, naked ascetics, and so on, up to the noble Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Venerable, for example, when the moon appears, the light of all the stars is overwhelmed.

Venerable sir. Any fortunate one, likewise, the discipline of a Bodhisattva, if completely dedicated to omniscience, will also surpass the discipline of all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Venerable sir. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva remembers the Tathagata and also generates the excellence of mind endowed with omniscience, by acting in his own realm, at that time the Bodhisattva should be known to have attained the perfection of discipline. It is said: Venerable sir. When a Bodhisattva does not generate the mind of omniscience, what is the Bodhisattva called at that time? It is said: Venerable sir. At that time, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, abiding in the discipline where the mind stream is not shown, is called one who possesses discipline. If one completely dedicates oneself to being a Shravaka or a Pratyekabuddha, then at that time the Bodhisattva abandons his own realm. If one completely dedicates oneself with superior intention to the level of a Shravaka or the level of a Pratyekabuddha, then just by that, the Bodhisattva should be known to be like a corpse. Venerable sir. For example, a magician or a skilled disciple of a magician seizes a child, ties him to a tree, and after tying him, cuts him into pieces and throws him on the ground, then the friends, relatives, and blood relatives of that child all think that this child is dead and will not be seen again, and they become miserable and possess a great mass of suffering. Venerable sir. Just as the child is not dead, but the thought of death arises, likewise, venerable sir. If a Bodhisattva falls away from the jewel of omniscience and abides in the level of a Shravaka or the level of a Pratyekabuddha, it should also be known as death. Then, the venerable sir addressed the son of Sharadvati, saying: What is the discipline of a Bodhisattva, what is the discipline of a Shravaka, and what is the discipline of a Pratyekabuddha? Do you wish to differentiate these disciplines? He said: Venerable sir. The nature of reality.
