When the time came, he was invested with royal power, and when he received the royal investiture, he thought to himself, regarding those who had become his old servants, "These are what I learned and possessed when I was in the place of youth, and I was also learned and possessed by these. I should let these people enjoy themselves accordingly." Then, I placed some of my attendants as leaders in the cities, some as leaders of affairs, some in the marketplaces, some in the postal towns, and some were given villages to enjoy. In the same way, O venerable one, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva desires to awaken to the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment, he also benefits immeasurable beings while practicing for enlightenment. He benefits them with material gifts such as clothing, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medical supplies, just as that young king benefited those attendants with whatever food and drink was available. O venerable one, when a Bodhisattva practices the conduct of a Bodhisattva, he also benefits beings with material gifts. And when he awakens to the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment and receives the nectar investiture, he then instructs and guides them with the gift of the Dharma, which is free from material possessions, according to their intelligence and wisdom. When he instructs and guides them with the Dharma that is free from material possessions, some are established in the state of Arhatship, some in the fruit of Non-Returner, some in the fruit of Once-Returner, some in the fruit of Stream-Enterer, some are established in the stage of forbearance, some in the stage of seeing, and some are established in the path of the ten virtuous actions. O venerable one, just as that prince, when he received the royal investiture, allowed those who served him to enjoy themselves accordingly, so too does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva awaken to the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment.

Having attained complete and perfect enlightenment, I will place sentient beings according to their desires. Thus, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the conduct of enlightenment, he is a close support for sentient beings. And having attained complete and perfect unsurpassed enlightenment, he will also place sentient beings according to their desires. Thus, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva is a close support for sentient beings, and having attained complete and perfect unsurpassed enlightenment, he will also become a close support for sentient beings, and even after complete nirvana, he will become a close support for sentient beings. Venerable one, for example, if a person relies on a king and serves him with reverence, then the king gives him a share of food and clothing. When that person relies more on the king, then the king becomes pleased and delighted, and being pleased, he bestows countless hundreds of thousands of clothes and ornaments, and increases him with possessions. Venerable one, similarly, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who desires to attain complete and perfect unsurpassed enlightenment, when practicing for the sake of enlightenment, benefits countless sentient beings with generosity. And after he attains complete and perfect unsurpassed enlightenment, he also instructs and guides sentient beings with the Dharma, which is free from material possessions, and liberates them from samsara. After saying this, the Venerable Maitreya's son said to the Venerable Sharadvatiputra as follows. What the Venerable Sharadvatiputra said is thus. Thus, Venerable one, for example, any sentient beings who live near a gold mine, that gold mine will never fail to be a close support for sentient beings. Even when it is newly dug and extracted not long ago, it becomes a close support for sentient beings. When it is made extremely pure and extremely refined,

When it is extracted from the mine, it is also a place of close living for sentient beings. When it is taken out and smelted from that mine, and then one-third or one-quarter of it becomes gold, it is also a place of close living for sentient beings. Similarly, the son of the venerable Sharadvati, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, will never fail to be a place of close living for sentient beings. When practicing for Bodhi, it is also a place of close living. When wishing to sit under the Bodhi tree, it is also a place of close living for sentient beings. When the Bodhisattva manifests complete enlightenment into unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, it is also a place of close living for sentient beings. Even when completely passing into Nirvana, it is a place of close living for sentient beings, because these causes are not possessed by all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Because of these causes, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is called supreme, chief, excellent, श्रेष्ठ (Śreṣṭha, best), the most श्रेष्ठ (Śreṣṭha, best), rich, unsurpassed, and incomparable. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, you should uphold, recite, and fully understand this perfection of giving of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva who has donned great armor, entered the Great Vehicle, perfected the superior intention, and completely given away all possessions, just as the resident son of Sharadvati has said. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the son of the venerable Sharadvati, the son of the venerable Maitreya Ganpo, the venerable Ananda, and those great Shravakas, gods, humans, Asuras, and Gandharvas, and the world rejoiced, and praised what the Blessed One had said. The ninth chapter on the Perfection of Giving, the Perfection of Giving is complete. The third volume. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden, with a great Sangha of monks of one thousand two hundred and fifty monks, all of whom were Arhats, those who had exhausted defilements,
