, this is acting outside the realm of activity of a Bodhisattva. This is the Bodhisattva not fully grasping the perfection of discipline. If one does not fully grasp the perfection of discipline, one abandons the vows of a Bodhisattva. If one abandons the vows of a Bodhisattva, one should recognize that this is a breach of discipline. Furthermore, Venerable Gangpo, if a Bodhisattva gives alms and inclines towards the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground, he is acting in a non-field of activity. If he acts in a non-field of activity, then just by that, he should recognize that this is a breach of discipline. If a Bodhisattva dwells in a house and merely enjoys the five desirable qualities, that is not to be recognized as a breach of discipline, but if he gives alms and inclines towards the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground, then just by that, he should recognize that this is a breach of discipline. Venerable Gangpo, for example, there is a king's son who acts according to the king's instructions, and the king's son of the royal family should learn the crafts, such as riding on the neck of an elephant, or riding a horse, or riding a chariot, or swordsmanship, or throwing, or the method of shooting a large arrow, or running, or jumping, or leaping, or competing in strength, or the method of defeating the enemy, or similar crafts. If he learns these, he is close to the king, and the king does not think of it as a fault. Venerable Gangpo, similarly, a Bodhisattva dwells in a house and plays and rejoices with the five desirable qualities, and even if he enjoys happiness to the fullest, that Bodhisattva still becomes a helper in accomplishing all-knowingness. If he also gives alms and inclines towards the Hearer or the Solitary Buddha's ground, then just by that, he is acting in a non-field of activity, because he makes himself unsuitable to be a field of all-knowingness. How does he make himself unsuitable to be a field? In that way, he does not fully grasp the perfection of discipline. How does he not fully grasp the perfection of discipline? In that way, he makes all-knowingness distant, this is

Furthermore, if a Bodhisattva engages in what is not his proper sphere of activity, then what is not his proper sphere of activity? It is the corruption of his moral discipline. Furthermore, O Gambo, if a Bodhisattva goes forth from the householder's life, and he dwells abiding in whatever moral discipline he has properly undertaken, but he does not fully incline towards omniscience, then that Bodhisattva is not endowed with the moral discipline of a Bodhisattva. Whoever is not endowed with the moral discipline of a Bodhisattva should not be called a Bodhisattva. If a Bodhisattva dwells in the householder's life, and has gone for refuge to the Three Jewels, but he does not fully incline towards omniscience, even if he enjoys the qualities of the five desirable things, by that alone he is not said to abide in the moral discipline of a Bodhisattva, to be endowed with moral discipline. A Bodhisattva who abides in the moral discipline of a Bodhisattva is inseparable from the perfection of moral discipline. Whoever is inseparable from the perfection of moral discipline is said to be inseparable from omniscience. Furthermore, even if improper ways of thinking associated with desire arise in a Bodhisattva, all of them will be overcome by a single thought of his that is focused on omniscience. Furthermore, O Gambo, just as if a precious beryl jewel were mixed and placed together with hundreds of thousands of agate jewels, the value, beautiful color, and light of the precious beryl jewel would overwhelm all those agate jewels, so too, O Gambo, all those improper ways of thinking of a Bodhisattva should be understood to be overwhelmed by the generation of a single mind endowed with the root of virtue that is associated with omniscience, just as those agate jewels are overwhelmed by a single precious beryl jewel and become dim. Furthermore, O Gambo, if a Bodhisattva desires fame and gives alms, he is acting in a sphere that is not his proper sphere of activity. All those spheres that are not his proper sphere of activity are corrupt

It should be known as discipline. O venerable Gangpo, a Bodhisattva should not give alms with the desire for fame, but should give alms with the desire for omniscience. Why is that? Whoever has omniscience has fame. He has fearlessness. He has the eighteen unmixed qualities of the Buddha, up to all the qualities of the Buddha. In that way, his giving is not grasping. When there is no grasping, then the perfection of discipline is fully grasped. He said: O venerable Sharadvatiputra, if a Bodhisattva gives alms with the desire for omniscience, is he not grasping at omniscience? Whatever is grasped is the grasping of his discipline and vows. He said: O venerable Gangpo, this omniscience does not dwell in a place or direction. Omniscience is not form, feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness. It is not conditioned, nor is it unconditioned, nor is it measurable, so it cannot be grasped. No dharma has an object of focus. Whatever has no object of focus is neither existent nor nonexistent. Whatever is neither existent nor nonexistent cannot be grasped. O venerable Gangpo, therefore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva gives alms, keeps discipline, and completely dedicates it to omniscience, he is not grasping at discipline and vows. If, again, that discipline is dedicated to the Hearer's level or the Solitary Buddha's level, then discipline is grasped, and the Bodhisattva has fallen from the Bodhisattva's discipline. He said: O venerable Sharadvatiputra, can a Bodhisattva who has fallen in this way be restored? He said: If the true limit has not been directly realized, and if the truths have not been seen, then he can be restored. Again he said: O venerable one, in this, the Bodhisattva's unsurpassed perfect
