Nāpā Gaṅpo, for example, just as a man who relies on a king, even if his wealth is exhausted, cannot maintain his light. Similarly, when a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva relies on the aspect of omniscience, all Śrāvakas and all Māras cannot withstand it. Said: Venerable Śāradvatīputra, how can a Bodhisattva be withstood by all Śrāvakas? Said: Venerable Gaṅpo, if one proclaims and explains the ground of a Śrāvaka or the ground of a Pratyekabuddha, and generates the thought, 'May I also become like that,' then one is withstood by the Śrāvakas. If a Bodhisattva tastes the flavor of those words and delights in them, then by generating improper attention, one will be withstood. Said: Venerable Śāradvatīputra, why are they called improper attention? Said: These are obstacles to the omniscience of a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva; they are not the cause of generating it, and they are the cause of distancing omniscience. Therefore, these are called the Bodhisattva's improper attention. Venerable Gaṅpo, for example, a yogi who wishes to directly realize the true limit of yogic practice and wishes to truly enter into truth, the arising of desire, hatred, and delusion is the cause of distancing Arhatship; those are called his improper attention. Venerable Gaṅpo, similarly, for a Bodhisattva who wishes to awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, attention associated with Śrāvakas or Pratyekabuddhas is a cause of creating obstacles to omniscience. If those attentions are generated, then in this way, a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva is overwhelmed by the Śrāvakas. Said: Venerable Śāradvatīputra, if that is the case, a Bodhisattva is overwhelmed by the Śrāvakas because generating attention associated with Śrāvakas or Pratyekabuddhas, that is

I should not be called a Bodhisattva. Why is that? Because those mental activities do not count among the ranks of Bodhisattvas. Son of the Venerable Sharadvati, for example, if a stream-enterer engages in all afflictions, he will not become an object of generosity. If someone gains the wisdom to abandon those afflictions, then he is rightly distinguished as a stream-enterer, not distinguished by afflictions. Thus, through fully understanding wisdom and being familiar with abandonment, he is called a stream-enterer. Son of the Venerable Sharadvati, similarly, a Bodhisattva who engages in and generates minds associated with Hearers or Solitary Buddhas is not distinguished as a Bodhisattva. Rather, by generating those minds and mental factors that originate from omniscience itself, in this way, he is distinguished as a Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva, if he abides in the mind of enlightenment, cannot be obstructed. Venerable one, for example, a master of archery, whether standing or walking, is difficult for enemies to obstruct, because he can both cut off the arrows of others and protect himself. Son of the Venerable Sharadvati, similarly, a Bodhisattva abiding in the mind of enlightenment is also difficult to obstruct. Even if he hears of the conduct of Hearers or the conduct of Solitary Buddhas, he thinks, 'May I also quickly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and just as the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the perfectly and completely enlightened Shakyamuni Buddha now teaches the Dharma to the Hearers, may I also teach the Dharma to the Hearers.' Venerable one, therefore, a Bodhisattva who is skilled in means, abiding in the mind of enlightenment, cannot be obstructed. Even if he hears the words of Hearers or the words of Solitary Buddhas, he remembers the Thus-Gone One, thinking that these words of Dharma originate from the Thus-Gone One, and therefore does not generate attachment to the Hearers. Son of the Venerable Sharadvati, therefore, a Bodhisattva abiding in the mind of enlightenment is

It is difficult to shake. O fortunate one, for example, a yogi who practices yoga, having attained the object of focus, and having cultivated samadhi well, cannot be disturbed by conceptual thoughts. Why is that? It is because of being extremely accustomed to that object of focus in this way. Similarly, a bodhisattva who abides in the mind of enlightenment is also difficult to shake. Why is that? It is because of not being separated from the mind of all-knowingness in this way. It was said: O fortunate one, if a bodhisattva is understood to be difficult to shake, are all those who have newly entered the vehicle, those who are irreversible, and those who abide in the essence of enlightenment? It was said: O fortunate one, son of Sharadvati, those bodhisattvas are also difficult to shake. Why is that? Because those bodhisattvas cannot be moved from their vows. Thus, those bodhisattvas who abide in their vows and abide in the mind of enlightenment are all difficult to shake. O fortunate one, son of Sharadvati, for example, the bodhisattva who is now fully enlightened, and the Thus-Gone One who has been fully enlightened for hundreds of millions of eons, who abides and remains, both of these are all-knowing. O fortunate one, son of Sharadvati, similarly, the bodhisattva who has newly entered the vehicle, the bodhisattva who is irreversible, and the bodhisattva who abides in the essence of enlightenment and has attained the final mind, all of these are like this: they are equal in terms of those who contemplate all-knowingness. It was said: O fortunate one, what is the difference between these? It was said: O fortunate one, son of Sharadvati, there is no difference in the mind of enlightenment, but there is a difference in terms of speed. Those two minds are the same, what are they? Those who are actually striving for enlightenment. O fortunate one, son of Sharadvati, abiding in the mind of a bodhisattva is irreversible. If an Arhat retreats from Arhatship, and also retreats from the stainless mind, then that
