I am desire, I am hatred, I am delusion, thus he discriminates. If he goes forth in the teaching of the Thus-Gone One, he thinks, 'I am endowed with morality, I am practicing pure conduct, I shall completely escape from cyclic existence, I shall attain nirvana, I shall attain liberation from suffering,' thus he thinks. He clings to what is not true as true. 'These dharmas are virtuous, these dharmas are non-virtuous, these dharmas are to be fully known, these dharmas are to be abandoned, these dharmas are to be realized, these dharmas are to be cultivated, suffering is to be known, the origin is to be abandoned, cessation is to be realized, the path is to be cultivated,' thus he discriminates. He (thinks) all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, all conditioned phenomena are suffering, all conditioned phenomena are blazing. 'In any way, I should escape from conditioned phenomena,' thus he discriminates. When he discriminates in this way, mindfulness associated with weariness arises, taking signs as prior. He thinks, 'This full knowledge of dharmas is the full knowledge of suffering.' He thinks, 'In any way, I should abandon the origin,' therefore he does not become arrogant towards all dharmas and feels ashamed, generating fear, extreme fear, and complete fear. He thinks, 'This shame towards those dharmas is the abandonment of the origin.' He thinks, 'In any way, I should realize cessation,' therefore he examines those dharmas in detail, and subsequently understands that those dharmas are cessation. He thinks, 'This realization of dharmas is cessation.' He thinks, 'In any way, I should cultivate the path,' therefore he goes alone to a solitary place, and by attending to those dharmas, he attains calm abiding. His mindfulness associated with weariness and the attainment of calm abiding cause his mind to shrink greatly from all dharmas, his mind becomes greatly afraid, his mind turns outward and is not arrogant, thereby condemning shame.

It generates no joy. He thinks, "I am liberated from all suffering, and there is nothing else for me to do beyond this." He claims to be an Arhat. When the time of his death approaches, seeing that he will be born again, he becomes hesitant and doubtful about the Buddha's Bodhi. With this mind fallen into doubt, he dies and is born into the great hells. This is because he has conceptually analyzed unborn dharmas. Second Chapter. Then, the youth Manjushri asked the Blessed One, "Blessed One, how should one view the four noble truths?" The Blessed One replied, "Manjushri, whoever sees all conditioned phenomena as unborn, fully understands suffering. Whoever sees all dharmas as unarisen, completely abandons the origin. Whoever sees all dharmas as utterly extinguished, realizes cessation. Whoever sees all dharmas as without substance, cultivates the path. Manjushri, whoever sees the four noble truths in this way, understands that these dharmas are virtuous, these dharmas are non-virtuous, these dharmas are to be fully known, these dharmas are to be abandoned, these dharmas are to be realized, these dharmas are to be cultivated. Suffering is to be fully known, the origin is to be abandoned, cessation is to be realized, the path is to be cultivated, without conceptualizing or differentiating. Why? Because those dharmas to which ordinary people become attached, hateful, and deluded, he sees as unborn, non-existent, false, conceptualized, and arisen. Therefore, he neither accepts nor rejects any dharma. His mind is not attached to the three realms, because he truly sees all of the three realms as unborn, like illusions, like dreams, like echoes, like mirages. He sees all virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas as like mirages. He sees the realm of desire as the realm of peace. Like that

And also sees the realm of anger and the realm of ignorance as the realm of peace. Because he sees all things as such, he becomes without attachment and anger towards all sentient beings. Why is that? Because he does not see any dharma that can be attached to or angered by. With a mind equal to the sky, he does not truly see the Buddha. He does not truly see the Dharma and the Sangha. He does not truly see all dharmas, therefore he does not give rise to doubt about any dharma. Without doubt, there is no grasping. Without grasping, there is complete peace without grasping. Manjushri, knowing the Dharma in this way, the venerable Subhuti will not come to prostrate at the feet of the Tathagata. Why is that? If the self is not found, how much more so the Tathagata? That is nowhere to be found. Then, the youth Manjushri asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, how should the four mindfulnesses be viewed? The Blessed One said: Manjushri, in the future, there will be monks who will teach the mindfulness of observing the body in the body with the aspect of impurity. They will teach the mindfulness of observing feelings in feelings with the aspect of arising and ceasing. They will teach the mindfulness of observing the mind in the mind, saying that the mind is of the nature of arising and ceasing. For those who do not have the perception of wholeness, they do not have the perception of dharma, thus they teach the mindfulness of observing dharmas in dharmas. After speaking thus, the youth Manjushri asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, then how should the four mindfulnesses be viewed? The Blessed One said: Manjushri, it is possible, but the secrets of the Tathagatas are difficult to understand. Manjushri asked: Blessed One, please teach the practice of mindfulness. The Blessed One said: Manjushri, if one sees the body as equal to the sky, this is the mindfulness of observing the body in the body.
